A stately city just inland from France’s Mediterranean coast, Montpellier is capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, known for its wine production.
Place du Peyrou, the city’s highest point, has excellent views and has a wide boulevard down the middle of its park. Its west end has a triumphal arch overlooking a pool and on the other side is a magnificent, 18th-century aqueduct running as far as the eye can see. To the north are France’s oldest botanical gardens, maintained by Montpellier University, one of the world’s oldest universities.
Rue du Bras de Fer is a narrow, medieval street with a secret sight through almost every portico, and another must-see is Place de la Comédie. This wide, pedestrian square is lined with street cafes and impressive buildings including the 19th-century opera house. Streets leading off contain high-end boutiques, while cheaper Montpellier shopping options are Le Polygone shopping center and the huge Odysseum leisure and shopping complex.
Other Montpellier sights include the 14th-century cathedral and the Antigone district with its grand Neo-Classical architecture. Also worth a look is the Musée Fabre art museum, and speaking of art, keep an eye out for the brightly decorated trams.
Before leaving your Montpellier hotel to go to Méditerranée Airport near the Cote d’Azur, sample some local seafood. The oysters are amazing!
Vibrant city with a Mediterranean vibe, lots to see and do.
Vibrant city with a Mediterranean vibe, lots to see and do. Excellent Tourist Information Centre that recommended a brilliant walking tour (in English). Loved a free photography exhibition (with English captions!) in the Pavillon Populaire near the TIC. I went to a concert at the Opera Comique and enjoyed good food but, sadly, no time for the Museum Fabre.
For a change of scene, I took a train to the coastal resort of Sete - well worth 12 euros!

The historical centre is quite small and easy to visit walking from place de la Comédie. Very good possibilities to travel with the trams. A lot of restaurants of all kinds and at very affordable rates.
Parc Du Peyrou and the aqueduct is a must see. The cathedral St Pierre is to be seen, inside as well as outside. Botanical garden is very well organised and counts numerous trees and plants.

Beautiful city.
Beautiful city. Lots of "old Europe" feel to it - tiny winding streets, quaint shops, numerous cafes. Very easy to walk but it also has a good tram system. It poured rain on my main day there, alas! I'm looking for places to retire to and Montpellier definitely ranks on it.

I filled my time very happily with a couple of excursions and a trip to Lette but could have done it in six days rather than seven. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Public transport is now free! Frequent trams take you to the outskirts, then buses for onward travel.
Train fares vary with each departure, some cheap and some can match British ones. There were a couple of delays on trains, it is a bit of a wild area and one was delayed for three hours or more as a train had collided with a wild pig!

Montpellier is such a wonderful and popular destination it can get booked up easily! Beautiful old town and other parks and monuments, great cultural life, many conferences and concerts, excellent public transportation, lively student life, and it is close to the beach and wine country with easy access to lively hills filled with history (the Aveyron, the Cevennes).
Our visit in Montpellier was great. We have chosen "Grand Hôtel du Midi Montpellier - Opéra Comédie and we were very surprised. It is located in the heart of the city as well as about 800 meters from the train station (what is very convenient when traveling with the trains) room was not large, but very cozy, modern with large vindows where we allowed to enjoy beautiful and sunny days. Also in the evening, we were able to sit at the opened windows, drinking champagne and enjoy wonderful evenings views.
Despite its overall volume, the courtyard by Marriott has kept a warm human touch. The decoration from the lobby, to the restaurant and up to the rooms is harmonious, trendy, yet atemporal. Food is delicious and freshly served. Breakfast is a must. The staff is extremely competent and welcoming. It truly reminded me of the 4 stars hotel we can find in Bangkok, with such a nice attention to details. My stay was short, yet, should I return to Montpellier, there is no other place I would stay.
I came to Montpellier to see and photograph the big 1980s urban project by architect Ricardo Bofill, of which this hotel was a part. It suited me perfectly and was easily accessible from the train station by tram with a stop right in front of the hotel. The spacious room was like a small studio apartment with a kitchen area and had a pleasant terrace off the bedroom overlooking the tree lined street. Everything was spotlessly clean and comfortable, great breakfast. Highly recommended...
This hotel was not artificially planted into the city by some business conglomerate.
It has grown in the city, just like the plants on its façade.
The hotel has heart, character and personality which wonderfully represents the city of Montpellier and its inhabitants.
If you are looking for something authentic yet comfortable with friendly and personal service, this is the place for you.
Lovely hotel in quiet location & only 10,-15 mins walk to Comedre. The nearest tram stop for line 1 is Corum. It is very easy to get to the centre if you don't want to walk. Our room was perfect. We had a balcony. The bathroom was good with a decent shower. The bed was comfortable. Alrhough not needed in March during our visit, the room had air conditioning. Recommended.
It is a new hotel, nice decor and somewhat close to downtown area. Close to public transit- walking distance to train station. Had a nice restaurant inside. Short walk to restaurants and stores. Good WIFI once you can figure out how to log on. Breakfast is an option. Located in the beautiful city of Montpellier. Has great potential.
Cute boutique hotel, ideally situated between the main train station and the Place de la Comedie. Charming decor, friendly staff, nice spacious clean room with good amenities. Added bonus, free tea and cake between 4 and 6 so a nice Anglophile feeling!! I would definitely stay there again if I were in Montpellier
Was my second stay in this hotel, and once again i found the location to be perfect for access to the main Montpellier hospital sites nearby, where I had an appointment the next day.
I also loved the room, and the breakfast was very nice as well (especially the scrambled eggs which were delicious!)
I have stayed here before and I like the hotel for its helpful staff, cleanliness and convenience. The location is quiet yet close to attractions and easily accessible from the airport. WHen travelling solo, I felt safe here.
It is also a very reasonable price.
Fabulous location. Outstanding service. I wrote to them in advance about our dairy and glute free allergies, and they had a lovely BIO gluten free bread ready for us —which was not the case in other similar hotels in France
We were returner visitors. We knew what to expect from last visit. Hotel quiet with good small pool and poolside area and bar for drinks food. Very good hotel. We will return when next in Montpellier.
Nice, cozy and charming appartment very well located (walking distance of the city centre). We had everything we needed in the kitchen to cook/eat something.
I totally recommend the place.
Lovely traditional hotel with helpful staff and an exceptionally comfortable bed.
I have stayed here four times and this hotel is always my first choice when I am staying in Montpellier.
A very well maintained and located hotel near to both the railway station and the centre of Montpellier. Excellent, friendly staff and a good breakfast served.
