I was asked for a £50 deposit after check in, apparently the hotel has been damaged in the past by residents and the caretaker wrote to me to ask me for a £50 deposit that could be refunded if the room wasn't damaged - the request was from 'Mike', not on headed notepaper, was this a scam?

Hello, A True Friend has stayed at this property previously and has recommended this Property, My Room was really lovely, and was in a quiet location. The Breakfasts filled me up each day I was staying. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to travel home earlier. The Guest House is really clean and hospitable. There is a bus stop close by, and the Railway Station is close by along the main road. This property offers scrumptous evening meals. But there are other options including a microwave in the Lounge upstairs, so you can get something from the Supermarket and heat it etc. There is also a very good pub that does meals which is by the Railway Station.
