Rolling Hills, Magnificent Gardens and Sandy Beaches
On the north coast of Spain, the seaside city of Santander is the capital of Cantabria. This beautiful city has it all: from stunning beaches and green gardens to captivating museums and a bustling central area.
Overlooking the lighthouse of the Mauro Island, the popular sandy beach of Sardinero is divided by the gardens of Piquio. These magnificent gardens feature Canarian palm trees, blue eucalyptus and colorful flower beds.
Located on the Magdalena Peninsula, the imposing Palacio de la Magdalena has a neoclassic French and English style. Wander around the green gardens and visit the small zoo, home to penguins, seals and other sea animals.
The Cathedral of Santander is a historic landmark in the center of the city. Built between the 12th and 14th centuries, this historic monument consists of two Gothic churches. The Alameda de Oviedo Boulevard is a shopping paradise where you can find everything you need.
Enjoy a walk on the wide seaside promenade, where you'll find a big selection of cafés and restaurants to choose from. Booking.com offers a variety of hotels, guesthouses and apartments in the area. The international Santander Airport is the only one in Cantabria.
I saw lots of reviews recommending this town. It was not for me. The planetarium, which many raved about? Closed. Has been closed for a while, actually. And apparently when it was open, it wasn't open to walk-ins. Tour groups only, pre-booked, minimum of 5 people.
Many restaurants were reservation only, actually. Many more were closed.
Saw my first homeless tent encampment ten minutes after arriving in the city. Graffiti everywhere. So many ATMs on Google maps, marked closed. Shops closed or going out of business. "Rebajas" signs everywhere. So many multi-lingual beggars.
Lots of smashed windows, sadly. The town looked like some of the worse areas of other cities I've been to, but all over. Even the church, which was recommended as a very nice building, had homeless and beggars in it. I was there on Sunday (so many things closed) and Monday. For a place supposedly well known for it's meals of fresh fish, mine was bland at best. For a Spanish town, surprisingly few tapas places.

Santander is so quaint.
Santander is so quaint. The historic buildings are beautiful. There are so many bars, tapas bars and restaurants everything is so easy to find and within walking distance. It just felt so clean and just a lovely place to visit we will be back. We went to Bilbao for the day on the bus from the bus station, but pre book your seats as it’s always busy. It takes about 1.5 hours but well worth it then you can jump on the tram line into the centre
There were too many bars and restaurants to mention but the one right outside the hotel was wonderful too.

We used Santander as a base to explore prehistoric caves, historical sites and the surrounding parks. Six days barely got us started. I will say going in January worked well as temperatures were mild and rain was sporadic. We didn’t leave enough time to explore all the city but people were friendly, there were new things to see everywhere and the food is great.

My wife and I have visited Santander on several occasions, but did not go into the city centre on this occasion as we wanted a hotel that was within a short journey to the airport for an early flight the following morning. The Hotel Chiqui facing the Sardinero beach fitted our requirements perfectly.

We came out of season when the weather was cooler.
We came out of season when the weather was cooler. We loved Santander … lovely green spaces , bars and restaurants . It was great value for money and w e also loved how clean and cared for the city was. We will definitely return.
The hotel is located across the road from ferry terminal. Rail and bus stations are a 5 minute walk away. Very central location for shopping or walking on promenade. The Sardinera beach area is a 40 minute stroll away. There are plenty of buses going to beach area. All staff were polite, friendly and professional. We had a comfortable large room. The public areas are very nicely furnished. We have stayed in the hotel a few times and never been disappointed. I would recommend Hotel Bahia to family and friends.
This is a lovely hotel near several beaches in the Sardinero neighborhood of Santander. Each room has a theme and ours was Tokyo. It was very comfortable and clean with a modern bathroom. The staff are all very welcoming and gave us good information about restaurants and transportation. The breakfast was one of the best we’ve had with so many choices of fresh foods. We liked being in a quiet neighborhood, yet close to some lovely beaches and many restaurants.
A big thank you to Sira for excellent communications before we arrived in Santander then agreeing to meet us at the apartment and allowing us early access. Once we managed up the 6 flights of stairs (thanks again to Sira for her assistance) we found that the apartment was as we expected and very clean too. Good facilities for making a snack or light meal. Location is excellent for walking into the centre or eastwards to the beaches.
As soon as you enter to this amazing place you see the red brick walls , the Woden floor .the kitchen with the best appliances. The living room and the main room with a remarkable confortable need
It’s location is perfect just a short walk to the train and bus station, walking distance to the main shopping area
Javier was a magnificent host he was available all the time
In a few words if you go to Santander stay here
The location was great. The hotel is nice you feel the history of the place. But I wouldn’t say it’s a 5 stars GL. The service is not 5 stars GL. Rooms are clean, big but a bit outdated. Showers were recently renovated and very nice and comfy, really liked it. The breakfast was good. The view from our room was stunning ! This is something we really enjoyed.
The location is perfect, close to the main beach in Santander, the Casino and restaurants. The room was very good, quiet, completed renovated with pretty furniture, look and comfortable bed. It's big hotel (convention kind of hotel) and does have 80s look. The hotel has its onw parking in the basement which was very handy, but it does cost money.
I have no words to describe how exceptional was to stay at this facility. The best time of my life. The best hotel I've been. So clean, beautiful, extremely detailed. The staff very professional, caring and polite. I'll sure recommend this hotel in Santander. Excellent position. Thank you for making my family live a blast of Christmas season.
This is an urban hotel nearby the bus station, city center, It is located in front of the bay of Santander right near the Centro Botin. The neighborhood of los pescadores and its restaurants is within walking distance. The rooms are excellent as well as the staff. Good and varied breakfast. We would return to this hotel.
A lovely, beautiful flat above Santander with a magnificent view! We simply loved it! You can take the bus all day and night into the city or take a lovely walk along the beach! Our host Emilio was so kind and gave us all the information we needed! We simply loved it!!! 🥰
Fantastic little hotel in a great location between the beach and the town. Had its own little pool which was an extra bonus after a hot day sightseeing. All the staff were so friendly and helpful and went above and beyond to make our weekend break in Santander exceptional.
The hotel is situated overlooking the port in central Santander so ideal for exploring the city. The spacious rooms are very tastefully decorated. We had a late arrival by air so we needed a central location for a bed for the night, it was very comfortable and quiet.
Everything was great. Loved the little details such as razors and toothbrushes in the bathroom. If there would be slippers it would be perfect. Hotel is very convenient, has a gym and a bar/restaurant. I felt very welcomed by the staff, everybody was very helpful.
We loved the infinity pool and the loungers. nice rooms overlooking the beach. Staff were super helpful and very attentive. Breakfast was really good too, nice range of food & all very fresh. very stylish panorama lounge bar. Would highly recommend Hotel Chiqui
Friendly, informative host. Room was ideal for single traveller. Clean and comfortable. Hotel not too far from either city centre or beach areas, on nearby bus or walking. Local bar selling nice snacks and drinks.
Great value for money.
This is a small, modern and elegant hotel in the Sardinero area of Santander which is the best for beaches, views, walks and nightlife. It has a secure, underground garage which, this time, was complimentary.
The staff were awesome!! Had an issue with parking which was totally unrelated to the hotel but they solved the problem for us!! Room was very comfortable and we loved all the pillows 💕
