If you are after peace and quiet. This is the place for you.

If you are after peace and quiet. This is the place for you. Hire a scooter and go and see the volcano before the day trippers. Once the day trippers go the place is so quiet. Little villages to visit and a beach called Palos ( I think that's how you spell it) a restaurant named Aphrodite along the front. Food was delicious. Try the pork shank. Definitely recommend the whole place. Stayed at 3 brothers hotel. Perfect.

The town itself is lovely, with its traditional architecture mixing dark volcanic stones with white painting, its twisted alleys, churches, sea promenade... A visit to nearby Paleokastro is a must (either walking up the old stone foot-path or up the road if you decide to rent a vehicle), and it can be topped with a visit to the small but interesting archaeological museum down in Mandrakion.

Initially the town seems to cater mainly for day trippers from Kos who come to see the crater and have a little time to spare before their boat leaves so there are quite a few touristy shops, cafes and fast food eateries at the entrance to the town. Go beyond that though and you discover a very nice town of typically narrow, winding streets with pleasing tavernas along the sea front and in the (well hidden) main square. There seems to be a lot of building renovations being done and I think it will all feel quite upmarket in a year or two.

Beautiful island town, traditional, blue and white, picturesque. Two of the best restaurants we have ever eaten. Cosmopolitan place. Amazing view to the sea all around, volcanic island with a caldera you can visit, long history, castle ruins. BUT noisy because of the motorbikes. They are everywhere and everyone uses them.

Mandrakion is a beautiful place to stay for a relaxing holiday and base for travelling round the island. Plenty or bars and restaurants all within walking distance. Beautiful labyrinth of streets. 1 hour ferry from Kardamena. Leaves 9.30 in morning to get to Nyseros and returns 3.30 to Kardamena daily. Would recommend staying at 3 Brothers.

    - very nice little town once the day tourists are gone - nice little restaurant along the waterfront - best way to get around the island is to rent a scooter - visit the volcano and Nikia before the tourist and busses arrive (around 11.00) - Mandrakion has a beach in the city center
