I used to live in Veliko Tarnovo (VT) so I know it pretty well. Being they old capital of Bulgaria, it is steeped in history and is great place for tourists with an interest in Bulgarian history to come and explore.

The free walking tour of the city is excellent.
The free walking tour of the city is excellent. We paid a premium price (50 euro) for a guide around the fortress, but are almost certain we could have found a competent guide for less. The fortress has a rich history, but know that what you see has been rebuilt based on what it might have looked like--there was no written record to know for sure.

My first time in this city since 2008. Very disappointed.
My first time in this city since 2008. Very disappointed. The city has become a tourist trap. No decent place to eat that's not overpriced and with a completely bored and "couldn't be bothered" attitude of the wait staff.
Tsarvets is an overpriced ruin - half of it is a construction site with junk and pipes rolling around waiting to trip people up. I can't believe one of the nation's greatest treasures is so run down. Compared to other smaller museums in Bulgaria, they have done ZERO effort to make it nice, tell a story, have exhibits that transport you into the magical time of the Bulgarian kingdoms. It's like walking around a junkyard parking lot. Very disappointing.
Everyone in the city is clearly just using their hotels and attractions as a cash cow. Doing the bare minimum, if at all. A waiter at one of the restaurants had the gall to ask my partner for a tip when he paid with a credit card. I guess the waiter assumed he was American (he's not) and used to tipping 20%. We didn't tip because the service is atrocious and the servers don't expect Bulgarians to tip. Very off putting.

A wonderful mix of old and new in this historical center of beautiful Bulgaria. Lively and also cool. And bulgarians are decent people. Great restaurants and atmosphere - top recommendation is Restaurant Shtastliveca in the center of the town. Great food and great service by waiters who even know how to serve a good wine. Excellent! Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of Bulgaria during the 2nd Bulgarian Empire 1185-1396. Approx 220 km from Sofia - same distance to Varna and the Bulgarian Rivieria and wonderful Varna at the Black Sea. Beautiful trip by car in a stunning nature.

Veliko Tarnovo is a nice town.
Veliko Tarnovo is a nice town. The tourist attractions lack English explanations. You can find Bulgarian and... German explanations! Tsaratvets Fortress for example. Fortunately, from time to time they play a recording with some facts and data. Not a good idea, because one cannot really pay attention to the explanations and admire the historic site at the same time.
I noticed the same situation in Balchik, at Queen Mary s Castle. Nothing to help the visitor understand what he sees. Pity!
Mira was a super hostess, going above expectations to help make our stay a success. The junior suite was so comfortable - the sitting area was great, enclosed shower, very clean, no smoky odor, comfortable beds, quiet, safe building and street, right in the old town area. Were able to watch the light show from the comfort of our room on Saturday night and that was fun. There was a little store close by to pick up water. Lots of good restaurants close by. Taxi stand close by, across the street from Hotel Panorama.
I liked the attention for details, the room was clean and warm, breakfast was good, the view and location amazing. It is not a 5 star hotel so that you expect more, even a 5 star hotel has the same breakfast daily but you have more options to choose from. Also it is quite central sau don't expect a big parking lot, if you want this choose something outside the city. All in all we had a great time and it gives what it promises, offering a good value for money.
The owner is a very positive and kind person! She helped us and gave us tips on where to go. Very cozy apartment with a wonderful view from the window to the Tsarevets fortress and the mountains. There is a coffee machine and a kettle, you can drink coffee with a beautiful view! The shower cabin is separated from the toilet, which is rare in Bulgaria. Very nicely decorated interior. The house is located a minute walk from a shop, a bar and a good coffee shop
I really loved the cosy environment and the welcome from Luci (I hope I spell this right). The recommended restaurant in town where you get a discount is a nice experience too so I would not miss a visit, and particularly if you never had frogs legs in your life. + Tip : When you get out of the property, cross the road and check the view from the little panorama deck, left of the « Hôtel Panorama » - Not to be missed.
We loved the fact that it was situated next to the Fortress and very close to the city center. We also loved the huge room (Family Suite), clean and confortable, with huge beds and sofas. Moreover, the fact that the hotel had a free parking area was also a big plus.
As for the breakfast, we enjoyed most the local pastry (like Bulgarian cheese pie, donuts etc), they were cooked there, in the same morning.
The receptionists working both day and night were very kind and helpful. They both were so fluently speaking English so I had no problems communicating. She was actually speaking several languages. Compared to other places I accommodated in Bulgaria it was so much better because it really matters to be able to speak to the staff
This hotel has a maaajor bonus: the view. If you are not afraid of heights, nor have a problem with trains passing by and making a bit of noise, it is just amazeing. The room was very clean, and the bathroom big enough. You have to consider though the bulgarian shower type: standing shower, without insulation or curtains.
Very cozy hotel in the heart of the city next to the main street and all restaurants and shops, really big and clean room, comfortable bed, big bathroom with everything that we need, the hotel is very quiet and relaxing, there is free parking for couple of cars, good time for check out, very helpful staff
The location and view are absolutely stunning, it is a definitive must see in Veliko. Everything was great. The studio is clean and nicely organized. The host very nice and prompt to reply to any question or request. Free parking is available in front of the building, on the side of the road.
Its central location makes Hotel Bolyarski the perfect choice for a city break. All rooms have a beautiful view to the Yantra River. The breakfast buffet was the same every day with tasty healthy food. Everything was fine, thanks to all the staff. I definitely recommend this hotel.
I stayed with my family at Gurko Hotel this spring and we loved it. The food was exceptional. The staff was welcoming and our room was clean and comfortable. The view was amazing and we enjoyed the peace and quiet.
Overall, great experience! I strongly recomend this hotel.
The perfect stay in Veliko Türnovo. The views to the fortres from our room were spectacular.. The bed was very confortable. The room super clean. The staff very helpful. The terrace on the top of the hotel have the best views to enjoy "the sound of the lights" show.
-The room was big and clean
-The breakfast was ok. Also the restaurant has some delicious dishes for lunch or dinner.
-The hotel has some parking places, if you come here with the car.
-A nice panorama with Tsaravets could be viewed from the restaurant.
Great modern hotel room - definitely NOT an apartment! A bit misleading advertising. But still very comfortable(great towels!), clean and quiet. Interesting area, quick access to ulitsa General Gurko and close to fortress entrance.
Good breakfast and excelent coffee. Fantastic Spa for a 3* hotel, very nice staff. Very close to the castle. Terrace at the top floor was a good place to spend quality time with friend, enjoying the good weather of late October.
We loved the old house and especially the view! That was the highlight of our trip in Bulgaria. Also the host was very nice and helpful. Totally recommended!
