It's great for a relaxing, time in nature or just general down time. It's got everything from water to mountains to trails depending on your interest and the time of the year.
Personally, it was great for some relaxing, down-time. I visited in shoulder season, where it was too cold to get into the water but perfect in terms of (less) crowds and ease to get around.
Kotor Old Town is simply charming, to trek through, to walk around or simply to enjoy a quiet evening with great food. It's lovely place to visit any time of day.
I would highly recommend a visit to Kotorska Suvenirnica in the Old Town. It's got a unique mix of souvenirs. Just ask for Marko he's an Encyclopedia of information and just a delight to talk to. We spent so long in there just talking about all the different souvenirs from cat magnets to olive oil, Christian saints, world maps and Murano jewellery.
The area in general is serene. A walk by the bay side and a good seafood lunch Konoba Portun restaurant, was the highlight for me. There are a number of lovely places. This was the only one I tried. And I loved it.
Other things to know:
The city is known for its unique cats and its love for cats.
Djir Taxi App is the best way to get a local taxi and get around.
In general, most people are very helpful and friendly. But that's also because they are mindful about hustlers - so best to do your research on prices and cabs.

I would recommend staying at Kotor over Budva.
I would recommend staying at Kotor over Budva. Eventhough we visited at April there were so many people. It was a nice, historical city. One downside is it was quite expensive and there wasn’t enough healty food options. The restaurants were overly crowded and the food was bad for the price we paid. The services was slow but they still took service fees everywhere. If you want to go swimming i would definitely recommend Budva not Kotor.

The city was very quiet and calm.
The city was very quiet and calm. Maybe it was because we went in March. Luckily the weather was very nice. However, I recommend that those who will come by road be prepared for winding roads. It is really difficult to find food outside after 22.00-11.00 in winter.

Kotor, located on the Adriatic coast in Montenegro, is a gem of a city known for its medieval charm, stunning landscapes, and rich cultural heritage.
Nestled between the Bay of Kotor and towering mountains, the scenery in and around Kotor is nothing short of spectacular. The bay, often compared to a fjord, creates a stunning backdrop for the city. The hike up to the fortress atop the mountain offers panoramic views that are well worth the effort.
Kotor's Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it's easy to see why. The city is surrounded by well-preserved medieval walls, and its narrow, winding streets are filled with historic buildings, churches, and charming squares. The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon and the Maritime Museum are must-visit landmarks.
The city's waterfront promenade along the Bay of Kotor is a delightful place to take a leisurely stroll. The views of the bay, with mountains rising dramatically from the water, create a picturesque setting. Waterfront cafes and restaurants offer a perfect spot to enjoy the scenery.
Kotor serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding region. Day trips to nearby Perast, known for its charming islets, and the Our Lady of the Rocks church, are highly recommended. Boat tours around the bay provide a different perspective of the stunning landscapes.

Kotor is an awesome place. 3 days is just enough to see everything. Staying at Kotor Old Town is best especially if you are visiting in off season. You can take Budva & St Stevenson Island tour one day and even Bar which is in same direction. Second day stay in Kotor and walk around the old town. Third day visit Perast, take the ferry to Tivat from Kamenari explore the Port of Montenegro and Tivat old town. This is the complete 3 days in Montenegro you can enjoy easily. If you are muslim then dont worry Kotor has a great Halal restaurant just in the center near the old town called BUCKO be sure to visit them otherwise you can enjoy lots of seafood options inside the old town restaurants.

Perast was amazing place to visit. It is small area but the view and vibe was so good. Kotor was overrated. We did not like it so much. We did not find good restaurant too, we have tried so many places but we like mostly Bucko restaurant. It was good enough. We like a lot to gelato from CATTISIMO, it was in the old town Kotor. Budva also nice place. Herceg Novi and Tivat also okay.
I felt truly privileged and lucky with the choice to stay at Apartments Doncic. Brilliant location, in the area of Muo, at the same time short walking distance to the Old Town Kotor. Apartment fully equipped, clean and fresh, the owner very helpful and responsive. Mini beach in 2-3 min walk. Felt like living a local life in a village, away from hustle and bustle, and groups of tourists. The most amazing was the view to the Bay Kotor, could admire it every single time. Highly recommend place to stay while in Kotor and Montenegro! 🇲🇪😎
This was our second stay at Livia’s apartments and it was amazing! Livia is the perfect host, the apartments are clean, well equipped and comfortable. They are also well located within Kotor Old Town and close to great cafes, bars and restaurants. We love the apartments as they have a modern finish and are really safe and secure. There is also a well maintained courtyard available for guests to use as outside space which is lovely! We will book to stay here again when we return to Montenegro.
This hotel is in a great location, far enough away from the old town and all of the cruise folks but close enough to get there quickly. The staff at Forza Terra are exceptional and we felt so comfortable during our stay - everything is pristinely clean and well kept. We stayed at Forza Mare last year and were really looking forward to our stay at Forza Terra…it certainly did not disappoint! Looking forward to visiting Forza Terra again on our next trip to beautiful Montenegro!
The location is perfect! It is inside the Old Town and it was very easy to find. The price was very low comparing the hotels nearby. Worth the price. The staff was also very helpful. They offered us a boat tour of the Blue Cave. And the tour guide picked us up from the hotel. The road for the fortress starts from the same street where the apartment is located, the staff informed us about it as well.
Very clean and reasonably well equipped.
Nice balcony with good views of the river.
A 10 to 15 minute pleasant walk along the waterfront to the entrance to the old town
The hosts were pleasant enough - though they seemed strangely nervous of us - not really sure why …..
We travelled for a month in Montenegro and this was our most expensive apartment - but then I guess it’s a very touristy town….
This was a fantastic experience!. The location was right near the north gate in Old Town, within a three minute walk to several wonderful restaurants. The room was large with stone walls and a kitchenette. Antonio was a perfect host. He was friendly, available and helpful, despite being overworked. I would recommend this hotel to everyone visiting Kotar.
We loved our stay here! The apartment was clean, spacious and just a short walk from the old town. There is a small patio with an umbrella and the room was fresh & cool even though it was so hot outside. The hosts were very friendly and even helped us organize our airport transport. One our of favorites stops in Montenegro!
The personnel is extremly thoughtful and were looking after us in every way. The hotel is very clean and located just outside the old town. The view in the balcony was amazing! Parking is around a minute walk from the hotel, and is safre and spacious. This was one of our best stays in Montenegro.
Studio Konos is runned by 2 brothers who are really kind people. If you are coming to Montenegro by plane, they can pick you up from Tivat airport and drive you to the studio which is located at the beginning of the old town... away from the noise! We definitely recommend studio Konos!
Nice sparkling clean apartment. Close to the Kotor old town (~10-15 min by walk). Stop.of local buses to Perast & Risan is just a few meters from house.
Checkin is as smooth as possible.
Kitchen is well equiped.
Wi-Fi speed is nice.
Will stay here again if visit Kotor.
Very new and convenient apartment.
Minibar was just right for the hot day.
Close to old town center and local beaches, though the water is typical for Kotor and not as good as in other parts of Montenegro.
The pool is small but kids enjoyed it in a hot day
The hotel is beautiful, located in the center of Kotor, a very convenient location, since all the beaches in the Bay of Kotor are close, and in the evening the charms of the old town are at your fingertips. Very pleasant accommodation. All recommendations.
Location was in Old Town.Owner helped us for early check-in due rainy days in Montenegro.Nice mountain view with balcony which they offered.(Not for this apartment on the picture).Very fast wifi connection.Thank you for all.
I liked a lot the medieval Hotel with a perfect location next to the bay of Kotor. We had a room with view on the bay. The staff was super friendly and the hotel had everything we wanted (e.g. standup paddling board).
Lovely location with beautiful views of the bay of Kotor! Easy accessibility to a variety of restaurants and the old town. Excellent service and a friendly team catering to all requirements.
Wonderful staff. Really good food - especially the breakfasts! Great location right in the centre of the old town. So glad we chose this for our trip to Montenegro.
Love the hotel, its location, the staff, the breakfast in the middle of the street ❤️
The perfect hotel if u want to stay in the heart of old town Kotor
