El Calafate is a small city in Argentinean Patagonia, situated in the foothills of the Andes and on the shores of Argentino Lake. Blending colourful wooden houses and Alpine-influenced architecture, it is the gateway to the Glaciers National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Booking.com offers a wide range of accommodation in El Calafate and surroundings, from 5-star hotels to cheap hostels.
The area was originally inhabited by the ‘Aonikenk’ people, while the modern settlement grew at the beginning of the 20th century as a refuge along the wool trade route, taking its name from the native blueberry bush known as ‘Calafate’. The town was founded by the Argentinean government in 1927 to promote the colonisation of the area, but its development started only after the creation of the National Park, in 1937.
The famous Perito Moreno Glacier is 80 km from the city. Mount Fitz Roy, the small town of El Chaltén, the romantic Onelli Bay, Lago del Desierto, and Roca Lake are some of the impressive landmarks that make up Argentina‘s 2nd-largest natural reservation. If you want to experience Patagonia’s languid vastness and tranquillity, try some of El Calafate’s rural accommodation or ‘estancias’.

The only thing to really do is visit the glacier.
The only thing to really do is visit the glacier. I thought we could do more to make an extra day worthwhile but the tours to visit the other parts of the park were super expensive. All tours in the area were way too pricey and you can’t really do anything else without a tour. The restaurants are good, but in general I think Chaltén has a lot more to do and see.

The trip to the Glacier was memorable, the people friendly and helpful. Restaurants were excellent and you could walk anywhere in town easily from any hotel in the central area. We had a lot of fun here! Highly recommend the Patagonia Queen Boutique Hotel. Rafael will take great care of you!

I am a tour guide and I come to calafate with groups, at the end of my work I have a day or two of rest for myself. it is a beautiful city. although it should improve its internet service (it is regular everywhere) and they have too many dogs loose in the streets although they are not aggressive.

El Calafate is the place to be for visiting the famous Perito Moreno Glacier. We did the Big Ice Adventure with Hiele Aventura and it was amazing. The town itself is fine but very touristy.
The waffle café elba'r and the Patagonia Brewery were the best places we went to eat and drink.
The Glaciarium was interesting, a very text-heavy museum, lots to read. We went to the Ice Bar there too, however I'd already been to the same concept in another city - if you've been to one, you've been to them all.

One day stay in El Calafate to do the most popular site of Perito Moreno Glacier is sufficient in my opinion. I took the afternoon bus without any tour guide to the glacier. Tour guides are generally provided in the morning tours.
Very nice hotel located on the top of a hill above El Calafate. We had our own car but the hotel offers shuttle service in the afternoon and evening into "downtown". Staff was very nice and helpful. They even let us change our rooms to a more silent part of the hotel when we did not have a good night sleep in the first rooms. Hotel has a nice and large lap pool, pretty warm and another smaller pool as well as a nice gym area with a view. Breakfast choice was plenty, buffet style.
The location of this hotel is unparalleled, you get a perfect view of Lake Argentina! Waking up every morning to the most glorious sunrise overlooking the lake is something I will always remember. The staff are so helpful and kind, the rooms spacious and warm— with daily housekeeping. This is a gem outside of the town of El Calafate; yes it is a taxi ride away from the center but staying in the tranquil setting beats staying in the town any day!
We had a great stay at this hotel for our anniversary! The hotel itself feels luxurious and the service was incredible. I’d like to especially recognize Augusto who went out of his way to make us feel special and celebrate our anniversary as well as the restaurant servers (including the lady). This hotel is a 10 min walk to the main avenue in El Calafate and definitely one of the best hotels in the city for those who want a touch of luxury.
Both hosts were fantastic, very attentive and always on hand to ask any questions. The rooms were great, big size, very clean with anything you many need. The free breakfast was one of the best I have had in Argentina, a big range of foods, from toast and croissants to eggs, cereal, ham and cheese. There was also a selection of fruit, fruit juices and yoghurts… with cakes for after too!
Highly recommend 10/10
The view of Lake Argentina and the surrounding landscape is beautiful. Sitting on the main deck looking out was heavenly. We were four people in a cabin and the rooms and facilities were well designed and comfortable. The grand living room of the hotel with its massive fireplace would be amazing in colder weather, but it was warm when we were there and we wanted to be outside!!
location.
it is just cross street from bus terminal (for el chalten, peurto natalie, day trip to Moreno Glacier, Bariloche etc...).
if you arrived el calafate in late evening or if you leave in the early morning this is the place to stay instead get taxi or long walk into town. no rush or worry.
the place is very clean. staff are nice.
each room has own washroom.
It is a spacious apartment, very cleanly maintained. Beds were comfortable and kitchen was equipped with utensils, though we did not get a chance to use it.
Perched on an elevated land, this property has a great view of Lago Argentina and the lights of the town around it from the window of the bedroom at night, it was simply amazing.
We loved Mary and her apartments! This is a great spot for anyone staying in El Calafate. Though not central, it is very close to the bus terminal. The apartments are very well equipped and very comfortable. And I can't enphasize it enough: Mary is a super host ! :)
What an amazing place! A little off the town of El Calafate, this place is an oasis in the middle of the Patagonian background. Really professional and friendly staff, always ready to help, a real plus! The ride around Lake Argentina was just amazing.
Clara the host was amazing helped us with anything we needed. The facilities are brand new and cozy. With her attention and care they will stay that way. Every little detail is simply perfect. One of our best stays in Argentina.
Staff is very friendly, Leonel and Rocio always do their best to help the guests. Room is spacious, and the looks and vibe of the hotel is really nice. Location is awesome, one block away from the restaurants and tour agencies.
It was the most spacious and comfortable accommodation I had during my trip in Argentina. A lot of light, a wonderful view, a lot of space, all the necessary commodities. I would stay there again if I return to El Calafate.
Pretty hotel a little bit outside of El Calafate (car or taxi required) with lovely views over the lake. Staff were incredibly helpful and accommodating. Room was very comfortable. Breakfast was very good.
Great staff, comfortabla stay (we had a private room), huge common kitchen to cook, cozy breakfast. we arranged our perito moreno tour also with them, it was great! best place to stay in El Calafate
One of the best hostels on my trip to Argentina. Lovely stuff, nice kitchen and shared area. Spacious bathrooms with hot showers.
Basic breakfast but still great given the price you pay.
Very comfortable, large room. Easy walking distance to the center of town. Reception very helpful with booking shuttles and answering questions. Glacier tour picked up at the hotel.
Possibly the best hostel I've stayed in yet.
Certainly the best steak I've had in All of Argentina.
And you cannot beat the view.
Plus they are safe and clean.
