I have never encountered anything disturbing there. more druggies and tranients where i live than what i see walking around Matamoros . Street light in El Centro .and having street signs make it easy to find places . nice parks and historical places honoring Texas and US , Mexico relations over the centuries , Museums , Galleries and Murals and Art , The streets were clean.

When I want to get out and do something new, I go to Matamoros to have real food and do few shopping at better prices. Everyone I met was very nice and polite. I have no complain about anything in Matamoros. It great to stay in the Zona Centro where you can probably walk to different places for shopping, drink, or eat.

Matamoros has a nice beach only a few miles away. Feel like I can drive everyday. Downtown is very large and can shop all day there. Several restaurants with delicious food and pricing is excellent.
