Matsumoto castle was lovely to see at night. The Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art is permanent and the outside is gorgeous but the exhibit itself was disappointingly small compared to the one in Tokyo. My favourite is the temporary exhibit of the artworks of Yasuka Sudou, an artist who died young of cancer at the age of 30. Her works interplay light and darkness and are technically impressive and emotionally touching.

We stayed at Hotel Kagetsu which is just a few minutes walk from the castle. The castle is def worth a visit. If you go to the top there are very steep stairs. We ate at two local restaurants. I can recommend the tiny tonkatsu restaurant which is just 50m down the road from the hotel. A taxi from the station takes 10 mins and costs 1000 yen.

The castle is beautiful, the local shopping streets are lovely and had variety. The Matsumoto City Museum of Art is fantastic for Yayoi Kusama lovers.
A nice quiet city after the throng of Tokyo, slower paced.

Good place to stay for access to the mountains.
Good place to stay for access to the mountains. The town is small but has good facilities including some big shops. There are a few restaurants but many close early and some are not easily accessible for people who don’t speak Japanese

A city to stay in for day trips!
A city to stay in for day trips! Matsumoto is welcoming and kind. Not too much to do in the city itself (I think one day is enough). we were in Matsumoto for 3 nights, on the first day came from Alpine route, on the second day we went to Kamikochi, on the third day to Kiso Valley. the 4th day was super rainy - was good for a museum + shopping mall + movie + massage. Enjoy!

Matsumoto is a mid-size city with several attractions, with its castle being the most famous. Areas around the castle are great for walking, while a bit further away are several parks that offer nice walks and views of the city and surrounding mountains. There are several areas with restaurants and cafes that are lively in the evening, including near the main train station. If you have a car, places to visit near the city include the Venus Line, a popular mountain drive offering fantastic vistas when the weather is good, and Kamikochi with its beautiful view of Japan's Alps, as well as historic small towns such as Narai-juki and Hida Takayama.
Very convenient, the bus-stop for overnight bus to tokyo is just outside the hotel. There is a convenience store, pharmacy, and couple of restaurants within same building. Also just opposite the Matsumoto train station.
Staff was accomodating in allowing for early checkin in the morning,on realising that I was going to checkout late night to catch the bus.
Room is clean, though small. However there is a space like a day bed size of sorts, to open up the luggage.
Value for money for a day use, to rest, bathe, before a long bus journey.
Best bunk beds, matresses and (supersoft) bedsheets I've had during my entire stay in Japan. Very comfortable, large beds and the indoor air climate of the dorms is well controlled. Bathrooms are clean and common kitchen is well equipped. Location is perfect, close to main attractions and still only 15 mins walking from the train station (but Matsumoto is not that big anyway). The street is a pedestrian little shopping street, so very quiet at night as well. I loved my stay and would recommend this hostel to anyone going to Matsumoto.
The hotel is super clean with the entire building shoeless so you can walk bare feet on tatami floors. The hotel staff even cleaned our luggage wheel. The onsen was very nice and had all the amenities needed. We also enjoyed the Japanese style breakfast very much with lots of selections.
Photos of the room from the website matches what we see in the room which is very good.
The sightseeing places are all within walking distance, the Matsumoto castle, the old heritage street… there’s also many good restaurants near by.
Modern Hotel with traditional spirit. Placed near Matsumoto station, I choose Onyado Nono because I was searching a traditional style hotel with onsen and I've been completely satisfied.
The room was spacious and confortable, the roof onsen confortable and with a nice sight on the surroundings and the traditional breakfast varied and tasty. It is worth also to mention the free drink service active during the day. Recommended
Had a great stay here and truly enjoyed the whole Ryokan experience. Staff was extremely hospitable. Thee traditional room and futons were comfy (though the duvet was a bit warm). The onsen was perfect and the dinner an breakfast were truly Japanese and all very good. Even though there are some language barriers, they did their utmost best to explain things, where needed with help from a translation app.
super awesome location, for the price you cannot beat this place. the breakfast was great and included eggs, sausages, a few side dishes, some buns from a local bakery with butter and jam, soup, rice, coffee, tea, juices etc - super great value all together. only about 12 minutes walk from Matsumoto station and so close to the castle and shopping street.
Right next to train station (Matsumoto East Exit). Lots of restaurants nearby. Nice location and Bus terminal is also very close to hotel. Value for money.Though rooms were small and no wardrobe for luggage. If you have less luggage no problem at all. Breakfast was OK with Japanese style mixed with some western options.
It's a hotel for the budget-conscious, so expectations to be adjusted accordingly. Helpful staff who promptly attended to some AC troubles. It's clean, though very dated. Quite comfortable stay though at a very good price. Good location to Matsumoto Castle and Nawate-dori.
I thought my bed was comfortable even though one night I couldn't sleep. That probably has something to do with me more than the bed. Good location. Not too far from the station and not too far from Matsumoto Castle. I used the onsen twice.
We stayed in a traditional Japanese room, which we all loved and was great for kids. Lovely onsen and breakfast in this beautiful hotel. Great staff and a fabulous location in the older part of town. We loved Matsumoto, was a gorgeous town!
Location is one of the best charm point of the facility. Both castle and station are reachable within 10 minutes walk. And still in the quiet river side. Kura, Japanese old style warehouse, is now rare and sound me nostalgic.
We used this hotel multiple times as our base between locations was Matsumoto. Absolutely no faults whatsoever and the convenience and price were fantastic value. Wouldn't choose anywhere else next time we are there.
The hotel was in a good location, in between Matsumoto castle & the station. The personnel were really attentive, they recommended us some restaurants that were nice quality. They gave us a room with nice views.
Great location, next to Matsumoto station. Great view of the mountains from my fifth floor room. Restaurants within walking distance. One of the larger hotel rooms I’ve had in Japan. Hot shower.
We came for our honeymoon & we had the best time at Fukashisho.
I wish we had another night there.
The hospitality was 10/10.
My favorite place from all the hotels & ryokans in Japan.
This hotel is located near Matsumoto station, a very good stay for hikers. They have baths on the 7th floor although I didn't really have the chance to use it.
