Wonderful staff and breakfast. The bar/dining area was cozy and great to meet/greet other travelers! Kudos to Stan, the Missus, and Darren. Hopefully the Cross Keys Hotel in Canonbie will achieve National Trust-worthy potential.
A better location right on the Borders, in Liddesdale, I cannot imagine (Hermitage Castle does not have adequate accommodations). ;) I woke up the first morning there with a Borders ballad tune playing in my head (I am NOT making this up). And the history of the place - no comparison - going back to the 1600's, when it was an inn and carriage house on the Edinburgh - Carlisle road. Living history - who were the historical personages that overnighted here?

A lovely area which provides some lovely walks of varying lengths (downloadable from the Langholm Walks website) and some interesting history. It is a quiet and peaceful and can be used as a base to visit attractions further afield.

At the junction of many roads so easy to go off exploring in different directions. Some beautiful parkland with bridges over the river - and open public toilets! Helpful tourist office with lots of leaflets. Would recommend the prehistoric trail of Eskdale but you may need boots and a bit of energy to get up the steep hills to the forts. People friendly and a useful bakery and large co-op. Lots of buses stopping so may be suitable for a visit by public transport.

The castle & racecourse by the river were lovely, I though areas were a little run-down, but when exploring the town with dogs, you would find those areas. The river walk was lovely, & the town itself was wonderful. We tried to eat in the Pub in town, the barman said we could let the dogs off the leads in the back, but then a young woman told us that we couldn't, this put us off staying for something to eat, which was a shame as the Vegetarian menu looked wonderful.

Langholm is a beautiful town soaked in history.
Langholm is a beautiful town soaked in history. The lovely river Esk runs right through the town. There are several lovely walks in the area, my favourite is round the Duchess's Bridge. There are a few places to eat all very reasonably priced. We had a lovely meal in the Douglas Hotel, the food was excellent, just a small point I felt that the waitresses who served could have been a bit more friendly. I will definately return to Langholm but perhaps choose other accommodation.

What a lovely little town.
What a lovely little town. Friendly locals and lots to see and do. Douglas Hotel had a lovely restaurant and the food was superb. The bar area was friendly and vibrant. Wish I had been able to have a little look in the lovely shops I saw but as it was the weekend I missed opening hours.
Very welcoming, friendly staff with high quality - mainly traditional - food and a well-stocked bar . The hotel is in an excellent location to explore Langholm and the surrounding area but is also very popular with locals - a very good sign in itself. The atmosphere in the hotel is very relaxing and we were happy to spend some time just chilling with a coffee and newspapers.
A Beautiful lodge located right next to the river ewes. Stunning scenery. The town is part of the Langholm Walkers Welcome Community. There are 14 different walks to venture out on. You get a complimentary basket of wood upon arrival. Loved the wood burner and the underfloor heating was a lovely extra. Rebooked for April 😁
The staff were fabulous, new owners are trying to upgrade the hotel to its former glory, the food was amazing and I highly recommend the haggis and black pudding balls with apple sauce. Being originally from the area it's so nice to see someone with the passion Sam and Steve have to bring this lovely hotel back to life.
We had a pleasant weekend stay. It's a lovely cabin, decent sized rooms, spacious and very cosy and supplied with everything you could possibly need. There wasn't much in Langholm itself for us, but it's just a stones throw away from Gretna gateway and we took a drive to the lake district which was about an hr and half.
Room is amazing and the land lady she is an absolute star. Very helpful. Super place and great breakfast to prepare you for a long walk. The room is super clean and bigger than the norms with a fantastic shower and fluffy towels; 5 star hotel. Also the bike parking at the back helps a lot.
Nice old Hotel, as expected, In town centre. Very nice staff, all happy to help and took the time to chat with us. Lovely full English breakfast. Well done to the chef. Luckily we had good weather and could sit out in the beer garden.
Very nice large room; lots of snacks provided, lovely views and conveniently located in pretty Langholm. Lots of nice country walks all around. The owners are very very friendly and I could have stayed forever!
