The Glory of Medieval England
Lincoln was a powerhouse of medieval England and retains amazing monuments from that period. In the Uphill district is the castle built for William the Conqueror. Inside its an original copy of the Magna Carta and its ramparts offer fabulous city views. Across the cobbled square which houses the large Christmas market is huge Lincoln Cathedral whose unusual façade features 2 tall towers, while another at its centre overlooks the Bishop’s Palace.
Connecting the cathedral quarter with the Downhill district is aptly named Steep Hill, a narrow street lined with unique shops and historic buildings including the Jew’s House. Even older are the Roman Newport Arch, Mint Wall and the well on Bailgate.
This road slopes down to meet the River Witham at High Bridge, a stone-arched structure with a half-timbered building atop that is the oldest of its kind in England. Lincoln boat trips depart from the Brayford Pool just west.
Another monument is the 18th-century Ellis Mill, opposite the Museum of Lincolnshire Life. The Collection combines an archaeology museum and art gallery, while The Lawn has a conference centre and the Joseph Banks Conservatory, displaying artefacts he brought back from adventures with Captain Cook.

Lovely castle and some lovely shops, although a few empty ones as is usual these days. The hill will put some off, but plenty of restaurants and bars. If you like your real ale, The Strugglers Inn is the place to go. Friendly town, will return.

We enjoyed rhe mixture of ancient and modern & it was great for a short break. We found the free tour of the guildhall very interesting, the castle is well worth a visit & what we could see of the cathedral without paying the £11 entrance charge is wonderful. Parking was provided at property from midday on day of arrival until midday on departure day. Parking in city is very expensive but there is a park & ride which we used & found convenient .

A great city to explore on foot.
A great city to explore on foot. The Cathedral is amazing, dog friendly and very welcoming. Unfortunately the Castle isn't but there is plenty more to see and do. Wonderful selection of shops, pubs and restaurants. Perfect for a short break.

The cathedral roof tour was brilliant. The guide so knowledgeable. Loved the old town area with lots of places to eat and see. We did the castle and prison. Lots of walking and discoveries. Very worth the visit.

The area between the cathedral and the castle was a new part of Lincoln for me, and I found it just as fine as the better known hillside part of the town. The room we stayed in, right under the roof, had the kind of nooks, crannies, and beams that my wife and I both love, and was a delight architecturally speaking. Staff was helpful and friendly, room was clean and very comfortable.

We did wander over to the brewers fayre pub to sit outside in garden there as weather was lovely and next door so convenient. Hotel looks better inside than the rather dated, tatty, outside of it.

Breakfast varied & plentiful, Full Breakfast was very tasty. Evening meals offered a good choice. We had Stilton Burger and Haddock, both were delicious.
