Cairns is a great holiday destination it has so much to do, and it is surrounded by beautiful mountains and rainforest , it is a great place for everyone, and it has really good food, coffee and great customer service.
I have visited Cairns frequently and always enjoy my time here. It's a good central and convenient place to base yourself to go to the Great Barrier Reef and drive for day trips in the hinterland, visit waterfalls, the Atherton Tablelands, the Gilles Ranges or up to Port Douglas. Some people prefer to stay in the northern beaches or in Port Douglas because Cairns city doesn't have any beaches. There is a popular and free artificial lagoon pool on the waterfront which is excellent. The Esplanade has a large playground with water features for small children, street gyms, and free outdoor basketball and volleyball courts. There are many places to eat out on the Esplanade, but also some pretty good cafes in the streets behind. It always depends what you are into, but I enjoy visiting the galleries, the botanic gardens and drives to the waterfalls and waterholes that you can swim at. If I need to get to a beach, then Holloways, Trinity and Palm Cove are an easy drive. Be aware that swimming in the wet season requires a stinger suit. I have been out to the outer reef a few times and would advise against going out there when the winds are 25k or more- it's just too choppy. 15-20 k can be still bouncy but do-able. If it's 10k or less then it's amazing and perfect! Green Island is fine for a short trip to see some ok fringing coral, but much of it has been significantly damaged by run off from the city and land clearing and over use.
For our family, location great. Short trip from airport, quick lunch at Red Barron Hotel, changed for trip to venue at Redlynch. We were only there for a few hours but found it to be a 2 star rating. I would not book this again.
Cairns is an amxing place and there a lot of things to do. 1. Great Barrier reef 2. Daintree Rainforest 3. Kuranda 4. Waterfalls 5. Crocodile Tours If you have a car it will be handy and can customise your itinerary as you desire.
Decided to go by Queensland rail on a sleeper carriage The journey was incredible value , all meals included which were excellent and staff fabulous The Kuranda railway and Skyrail is a lovely tourist attraction , the Skyrail took me out of my comfort zone but fantastic scenery gliding through world heritage rainforest The esplanade is great and the pool and water park options are great for kids The shopping is excellent, likewise the variety of restaurants on offer The heat and humidity is quite oppressive, but like new places you cope There are buses , but walking is your best option around Cairns so moderate mobility is a must! Flew back to Perth, re Cairns Airport easy to get to and navigate Great holiday and can’t wait to go back and explore more!
Really beautiful, so far on my travels around Australia this has been my favourite place to stay. Would 100% recommend trying Chicken Shed and Jimmys Burgers for food as they’re AMAZING! Would also recommend doing the flight tour of the Great Barrier Reef, it was spectacular, the snorkelling would possibly be a great option too (hate the ocean so didn’t do the snorkelling) Kuranda train and Sky rail is a deffo must do too, really beautiful place and there’s so many amazing sites to see!
