sleepy city by the Mekong, Savanakhet is opposite a short trip over the bridge. I loved the lack of the traffic hum of a big city, particularly on the Laotian side. In another universe there would be even easier to cross back and forth as if it was the same city. Loved this duality.

The market was very interesting, prices ridiculously cheap and a huge variety of goods on offer .the river night market with restaurants is worth the trip alone . Temple and buddha on the mountain is definitely worth seeing.
It was a pity the smoke haze covered the city from the the temple , it would be fantastic view looking down over the river and city.

Mukdahan is a border town with Laos.
Mukdahan is a border town with Laos. There really isn't much to see there, and better experiences in Thailand can be found elsewhere. There is the Indochina market, which is a large wholesale market close to the river - however JJ Market in Bangkok is much better with cheaper prices. There's a few large temples, however other temples can be found elsewhere in Thailand. There is some excellent Vietnamese bread and sandwiches at the walking street night market, but those can be found in Ubon and Udon.
Getting around is done by walking or renting a motorcycle. You can take a tuk-tuk, but those are expensive.
Mukdahan: Hot and dusty, but a good resting point before jumping the border to Laos.
