Exellent location a short walk from the centre but quiet. Good restaurant, Casona de Beaterio top of hill, turn right. Easy, secure parking in indoor garage just around the corner. Huge, comfortable bed. Very helpful staff member. Spacious room, large balcony.

Great access to the nearby Magic Towns of Mexico, Coatepec...
Great access to the nearby Magic Towns of Mexico, Coatepec and Xico, easily reached by bus from Mercado de los Sauces for $10 pesos to Coatepec and another $10 pesos to Xico from Coatepec. You can do both in one day but we would stay in Coatepec on a future trip. The area including Xalapa has access to good locally produced coffee both ground and whole beans. Xalapa has very nice historic well preserved buildings. The historic Centre is hilly so be prepared to walk the hilly streets. A visit to Xalapa was a better than expected treat.

I loved the museum of archeology, for its exhibits, architecture and beautiful patios. The cathedral and museum dedicated to San Rafael Guizar y Valencia was very informative. I'll need to go back to enjoy what I did not have time to see.

Maybe the prettiest and most polished non-touristic centro area I've been in Mexico, and while their isn't a massive tourist checklist (mostly it's parks, vibes, and great food) their archeological museum might be the best museum in the country outside Mexico City's with a focus on the local Olmec history. Nearby small towns like Coatepec, Xico, and Orizaba also stand out as some of Mexico's prettiest Pueblos Magicos.
