Alturas didn't have much to offer in the way of restaurants but we did find a good Thai place that had great food. In general the town seemed somewhat depressed. It was a convenient stop-over place for us but otherwise I wouldn't recommend it.
Enjoyed walking around peeking in shop windows (it was Sunday and all was closed) and a drive out to the bird and wildlife viewing area just South of town. Be sure to drive to both viewing areas, one before the bridge and the other over the bridge on 395.. We ate at a Mexican Restaurant - El Agave Azul 206 No Main - and enjoyed a nice vegetarian entree and a large glass of wine.
Small town, pot hole city old run down homes for a small place sure are alot of drugs. And the one thing I overheard was"how are you doing" "well my name has not been in the paper for a while.
