You’ve heard of glamping, but what about glamourvans? These luxury caravans come in all shapes and sizes, including covered circus wagons, retired Glastonbury camper vans, airstreams and even a double-decker bus. We’ve picked five of our favourites.
Caravane Airstream Américaine 1976 in Nantes, France
The other-worldly Caravane Airstream Américaine
The Caravane Airstream Americaine 1976 is a refurbished airstream camper that looks like it’s just popped in from outer space and was designed for time travel. While the Caravane Airstream is equipped with all the mod cons, the owners have kept enough of the original fittings to retain its retro 70s charm.
Huettenpalast in Berlin, Germany
One of the Huttenpalast indoor caravans
The caravan holiday designed for people who hate the outdoors: Huettenpalast is based in an old vacuum cleaner factory in Berlin’s Kreuzkolln neighbourhood that has been refurbished into the ultimate hipster hotel. Strings of fairy lights, squashy sofas, vintage rugs, luxury tents and a retro caravan parked in the corner all contribute to a warm, and inviting atmosphere.
Camp Kátur in North Yorkshire, UK
One of the many unusual places to stay at Camp Kátur
Betty the caravan (named after her owner’s granny) used to be a regular at Glastonbury festival but she hung up her dancing tires in 2016 and has become one of the beautifully-kitsch accommodation units at Camp Kátur. Based in the Camp Hill country estate in North Yorkshire, Betty still has all her original fittings but with modern features added. Wake up in this cheery caravan to a sunny English morning and eat breakfast while overlooking some of the UK’s most verdant countryside.
BaseCamp Bonn in Bonn, Germany
The Eye Candy drag queen van at BaseCamp Bonn
Glamourvanners love a good theme and it doesn’t get much more elaborate than the caravans at BaseCamp Bonn. Here you’ll find refurbished caravans decorated in the style of Flower Power, Space, Rockabilly, Royalty and a few revamped train carriages, just to add some variety. Start your day with a right royal cup of English breakfast tea or slip over to the Zen van for a cup of green tea with your neighbours. Or if you prefer champagne check out the Eye Candy drag queen van, and discuss your next adventure with the Globetrotting caravan crew.
Camp Silver Island HideAway in Texel, The Netherlands
The Camp Silver American Airstream caravans
For some of us the true appeal of a caravan holiday is the chance it offers to get back to nature (and away from it all). So if the idea of chatting to everyone at the communal BaseCamp or Huttenpalast caravan parks sounds fun but a bit overwhelming, book a van at the Camp Silver Island HideAway in Texel, The Netherlands. The camps American Airstreams present a contrast to the delicate greens and blues of the Texel landscape.
South Causey Inn in Durham, UK
Inside the South Causey Inn caravan
The rural scenery of Beamish Valley in the Northumberland isn’t an obvious setting for one of London’s red double-decker buses. But the presence of one at the South Causey Inn creates the perfect combination of silliness and nostalgia. Visitors sleep on the top deck in a truly massive, custom built bed, and downstairs you’ll find a fully-stocked breakfast nook.
