Destination inspiration: Adelaide, Australia

Why to go?

Oozing culture and charm, Adelaide stakes its claim to be your new favourite town. The city was founded in 1836 as a planned capital for a freely settled British province, but has undergone a huge transformation in recent years. Action-packed side streets, museums and tummy-rumble-inducing food markets join forces with its sandy beaches and picturesque parklands.

The wine scene here is second to none, with over 200 cellar doors within an hour’s drive of the city. In fact, Adelaideans are so crazy for their vino, the local university offers a degree in wine tasting and evaluation. With vineyard tours galore, you’ll soon know your shiraz from your sauvignon.

Adelaide has a bundle of beaches to brag about, with many of them close to the city. Whether you’re looking to catch rays or waves, you’ll find an ideal spot to park your beach bum. Moana beach ranks as the best all-rounder, with clean water, camping facilities and shaded seating. If it’s good surf you’re after, look no further than the shores of West Cape, with waves averaging over 1.5 metres.

Venturing down one of the city’s side streets (‘laneways’ as they’re locally known), you’re likely to stumble upon pop-up street parties, vibrant markets and achingly cool coffee shops and bars. Restaurants plate up local ‘tucker’ such as kangaroo backstrap, as well as further-flung treats like Korean sushi and Russian pirogi.

When to go?

With mild winters and hot, dry summers, Adelaide is worthy of a visit all year round. Head here between February and March for warm weather and the internationally renowned Adelaide Fringe Festival. Bar hopping and whale watching are a great shout for the winter months from July to August, but be prepared for colder nights, when temperatures may drop below freezing point.
