The rocky coastline of Koločep Island, Croatia
Koločep’s natural beauty taps into all your senses. The heady saltiness of the Adriatic and the scent of pomegranate and citrus trees floats on the breeze, and the water is so clear you can see the fish as they dart about between the rocks. This is an island made for relaxation and daydreaming, for long walks and wild swims in the endless sunshine (officially, over 250 days a year).
Fresh oysters from the local daily catch
With fewer than 200 permanent residents and Koločep being car-free, visitors can expect plenty of peace and privacy. Foodies will enjoy fresh fish and oysters brought back from the daily catch and fine wine from local vineyards. Nature lovers can explore the dense pine and carob forests and get lost in ancient olive groves. Made of limestone and dolomite, the island has a rocky coastline typical of the Dalmatias, except at each end, where there are two sandy beaches. There are Romanesque churches dating back to the 9th century, many of which are in a beautiful state of ruin, and mysterious caves and coves for adventure-seekers.
The island is at its most mellow in early June and September
When to go?
This island is tiny, so it’s best to avoid the summertime rush in July and August, when cruise ships and holidaymakers pour into nearby Dubrovnik and start their rounds of the Dalmatian coast. You can enjoy the best of Koločep in early June and late September, when it’s at its most peaceful.
