Lindos is more than a beach town, it’s a living history museum. Its fortified hilltop Acropolis has seen generations of Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans come and go. On the southwest slope lie the remains of an ancient theatre, once holding 2,000 spectators enjoying theatrical shows, musical performances….even sacrifices. A hike down from this historic peak envelopes you in all-encompassing views of the more modern but equally alluring town and its beach-laden coastline.
Narrow, cobbled backstreets and whitewashed houses slope down to the sea and sandy shores. The most common form of transportation in these slender passages is by donkey, so don’t be surprised to see them herded through town. Sprinkled across Lindos are a variety of Captains’ Houses – age-old residences built by prosperous sea merchants to flash their cash. Today, many have been turned into bars, making it easy to pop in for a look at their beautiful pebble flooring and intricately carved doorways.
Lindos’ main beach, Megalos Gialos, offers a long strip of golden sand, lined with bustling bars and traditional Greek tavernas. Situated in the same bay is the beach of Pallas, which is smaller but more popular with regulars and locals. Watersports and excursions on glass-bottomed boats ensure building sandcastles isn’t the only source of fun.
When to go?
Beaches are busiest from June to August when temperatures reach their peak, so visit either side to benefit from more pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Also, during the busier months, tour buses and boats will arrive every day.
