Ancient glaciers, sprawling mountain ranges and frozen lakes dotted with islands – the world’s finest outdoor ice rinks boast some spectacular scenery. Here are five of the best in the world, where you can take in the sights while gliding across the ice for an exhilarating and unforgettable experience.

Lake Louise in Banff, Canada

Skate through a handmade ice castle at Lake Louise

The glacier-fed Lake Louise is known for its bright turquoise hue but it is just as spectacular during the winter when it freezes over and turns bright white to match the snow blanketing Banff’s phenomenal landscape. In fact, there’s so much snow at this time of year that this natural skating rink has to be cleared daily, for visitors to enjoy its panoramic view of the surrounding mountain peaks. The rink also boasts a fairytale ice castle, which you can skate through. Fairmont Château Lake Louise is just steps away from the rink and offers skate rental from the main lobby.

Lac de Joux in Switzerland

Lac de Joux is Europe's largest outdoor skating rink

When Lac de Joux freezes over, it transforms into Europe’s largest free outdoor skating rink. But since the lake spans 9.5 square kilometres and rarely freezes over in its entirety, dedicated skating areas are marked off to show where the ice is safe to skate on. Along the shore, vendors set up shop selling hot chocolate and snacks. Check into the charming and rustic Maison Junod, just a short drive from the lake.

Lake Vänern in Sweden

Lake Vänern is ideal for Nordic Skating

Vänern is Sweden’s largest lake and ideal for the authentic Nordic skating experience – recreational long-distance skating on natural ice. As Lake Vänern is home to a staggering 22,000 small islands, it’s no surprise that skaters opt for long-distance trails to maximise the sights they take in. Stay at the delightful Närebo Gårdshotell, located a few minutes’ drive from the lake shore.

Sokolniki Park in Moscow, Russia

This outdoor rink is just outside of Moscow's bustling city centre

Just outside the centre of Moscow, Sokolniki Park is one of the city’s popular green spaces and in winter, it hosts a huge, 5,400 square metre skating rink. The ice is lined with towering trees and decorated with colourful, twinkling lights and a large screen for a touch of seasonal entertainment. Check into the stylish and modern 1 ART HOTEL, less than 20 minutes’ walk from Sokolniki Park.

Yosemite National Park in California, USA

The iconic Half Dome and Glacier Point are visible from the rink

The Curry Village Ice Rink is located inside Yosemite National Park and offers unobstructed views of two of the park’s most famous landmarks: the Half Dome and Glacier Point. When you need a break from skating, you can warm up at the rink-side fire pit while enjoying the view. Yosemite Magic "A" is a cosy holiday home located in Yosemite West, just a short drive from the rink along frosty, tree-lined mountain roads.
