This is a great stay if you are visiting Jaffna! Both Sudak and Mathu are really nice guys who speak English very good as well. They can tell you a lot about any Sri Lankan things you want to know and arranged a lot of stuff we requested; breakfast, diner, scooter renting, sending a package over to Holland, a TukTuk when we needed one really early in the morning (we did not want to risk PickMe not being available, we were visiting a wedding). The rooms are clean and have all facilities you need. Nice addition is they have a swimming pool which is really nice on hot Sri Lankan days. Definitely recommend this place! 👌

Everything! Breakfast was delicious, room had great size, no hot shower in some rooms but in shared showers yes, so not a problem at all. Tony and his brother are amazing, and Tony gave many advices and suggestions about Jaffna. Staying again there when I visit the city again!

Allen, as mentioned over and over in other reviews, is the best host EVER. This kind of people makes the difference when traveling like we do, where the main goal is to enjoy the culture and people, as much as the places we visit. Allen went way beyond expectations on helping us with whatever we may need (from train schedules, arranging a great driver for a day-long tour, giving us recommendations for local places, to taking his bike and buying us some cold beers after hours, or getting up to prepare us an unusually early morning breakfast to go, due to our very early schedule), overall making us feel like his true guests despite the commercial relationship. Well-travelled, Jaffna-native but with many years in Europe, Allen is the kind of person that you hope you have more time to get to know better, and that will remain as a highlight of any trip. The property is his own home, where you rent some rooms. It is a very quiet spot in a green and shady compound in a cul-de-sac, a great respite from some of the Jaffna frenzy. Located a quick 5-min. tuk-tuk ride from the train station, it is also near the main Hindu temple of the city, a couple of blocks away. The room we rented had its own exclusive bathroom, but crossing the living room. There was another room with a full private bathroom, not available at the time. The house has a quaint feeling, very cozy and clean. The AC in the room worked fine and it was very welcomed. Breakfast was great, abundant and tasty, prepared by Allen on the spot.

Excellent Hospitality!! Iresha & Dishtha made our stay more lovable… kudos to whole team for maintaining the property to its best!!! We had a wonderful experience at The Thinnai Hotel. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed cold facial towels, juice and attentive service. Everything about Gatetrees was great, especially Karna, the manager. I learned many things from our conversations, and enjoyed watching Karna perform the rituals for the first day of Pongal. The rice dish he cooked was very tasty. Karna organized a tuk tuk tour of Jaffna peninsula for me with Sinthu. Sinthu showed me many interesting sights. He also told me about Tamil history and current Jaffna customs. I recommend Gatetrees to anyone.

They communicated well even before arrival and made sure there is no waiting for key collection, everything went smooth in a timely manner. It was such a peaceful stay after my rushed island tour. The garden and overall environment were wonderfully calm and quiet, allowing me to unwind completely and elevating my entire holiday experience. A wonderful experience here. Quite remote and next to a sleepy fishing village, the huts have been lovingly constructed using local materials. They are open to the elements, which allows the fresh ocean breeze to blow through (quite strongly at times!) and keep the rooms cool. Mosquito nets are provided, although we didn’t see any mosquitoes - but still offers protection from various bugs that visit at night, and the pesky flies during the daytime. Some of the huts have steep stairs to access the bedroom upstairs, while the bathroom and toilet are situated separately downstairs (not recommended for the elderly or disabled). However, three new huts have recently opened, that are ground level and have attached bathrooms. The whole place has been built with regard to ecological concerns. The staff (also hired locally) are wonderful and there is a very talented young chef named Ashwin who, in addition to preparing delicious meals, acts as a general manager in the absence of the owner. The property also has its own tuk tuk, which is handy for trips around the island or to Jaffna (29 km away). We would definitely recommend a stay here - it’s a totally different and unique experience, among lovely hospitable people.
