This 5-star superior hotel enjoys a unique location on top of the Mönchsberg, a hill in the centre of Salzburg. The property while originally built centuries ago, shows no sign of its age. It is beautifully modernised both inside and out and impeccably maintained. Genuinely good furniture in the rooms and across the public areas including the wonderful restaurant and bar area. The excellent breakfast is served on the most wonderful terrace overlooking most of the city by attentive and professional staff. The hotel restaurant is sublime. Make sure you have at least one meal there. The hotel itself while on a hilltop, is actually a short walk away from the city''s Museum of Modern Art which is beside a (free for hotel guests) elevator that takes you directly to and from the city centre. From the moment you arrive to the 'sad' moment you reluctantly leave, the whole place oozes with charm, elegance and professionalism. We certainly were very sad to leave.

Hotel positioned right in the old town with the Christmas markets and shops within a few hundred meters, the ideal position for a weekend away when you don't want to waste time and money on transport. In addition it was only a 15 euro taxi ride from the hotel. On the door step were numerous bars and restaurants, so all in all a good choice for a weekend away. The hotel was clean and tidy, the rooms were fabulous and the staff helpful, the only slight negative was the hotel bar/café which seemed limited and shut quite early on Sunday night. We did not use the hotel restaurant so cannot comment.
We stayed at the Auersperg Hotel which was close to the Thursday market and lots of interesting restaurants. The old town is a short but interesting 10 minute walk away. We also took a segway tour (the segway office is two minutes from the hotel) which took us around the whole of Salzburg in 90 minutes.
Lots to do and see! Many fantastic and picturesque views! Visited the castle, Mozart birth house and residence, old town area, Mirabell Palace gardens, Stiegl Brewery, Hangar 7, Soiund of Music tour and Berchtesgaden Salt mine. Stayed at the Allstadt Stradtkrug Hotel - family owned and run absolutely wonderful hotel in every respect. Lots of lovely restaurants - our favourites were the Alten Fuchs(Old Fox), Zum fidelen Affen (Crazy Monkey) and Gablebrau! All brilliant food, service and value for money. Very easy to get around the city, on foot or by trolleybus! Overall a lovely city with a friendly welcome!
Only stayed overnight and had an early flight next morning but really enjoyed salzburg on previous visits. The old town is very interesting and a trip up to the castle by furnicular gives great views over the city. The public transport in and around Salzburg is easy to use and there are excursions available in the surrounding area and also of course the Sound of Music tours. A great place for a beer is the Braurestaurant Imlauer on Rainerstrasse. This is nearer to the train station than it is to the old town, but you can have just a drink or a really good meal with vegetarian options. One of its other advantages is that it has a seperate smoking room, where food and drinks are also served with no need to go outside for a smoke after dinner! Hotel Adlerhof on Elisabethstrasse is a clean and comfortable B&B in vicinity of the main train and bus stations-would definitely stay here again.
Having been there 7 times in as many years now we know that Salzburg is a wonderful place to visit. The City Centre is compact and easy to get around and there are numerous historic buildings to visit and enjoy. Within easy travel distance also there are other wonderful attractions such as the Zoo and the cable car up the Untersberg Mountain along with numerous other beautiful small towns and villages within easy reach. The travel network is incredibly efficient. If you visit buying the Salzburg Card is an absolute must to reduce your costs and maximise the benefit of your visit. Things to avoid - the organised tours are a very easy, albeit expensive, way of making sure that you visit all the essential sites and get all the information that you need. You will soon learn though that you can easily get to all of the must see attractions either by foot or by public transport at a fraction of the cost. Where to eat - lots of wonderful cake shops at fair prices but eating out is more expensive than many other European cities that we have visited. If you are coeliac, as is my wife, there is now far more awareness than in the past. Pizza & Pasta Spaghetti at Getreidegasse 14 was good with plain and simple food and fairly priced for the area. A tip for the first time visitor - avoid visiting at busy times when there are music festivals on etc - flights cost far more as does hotel accommodation. Can get very crowded at times as well so not easy to get round and people always in front of the view that you want to photograph. People are generally very friendly and helpful. Not the sort of place that you ever feel intimidated in. If you are a non-smoker prepare yourself though for a throwback to those days when you came out of restaurants and pubs smelling of smoke and gasping for air. Smoking inside is still allowed at some venues.

Good location on the outskirts of Salzburg with decent free on-site parking. There is a bus stop right outside the hotel with regular buses to the city centre. Friendly, jovial staff who were very helpful. The building has a distinct alpine flair and the room was spacious, comfortable and quiet. It was the perfect place for a one night stay and I would definitely stay again should I return to Salzburg.

Breakfast was superb and the hotel is in a great location. The room and beds were also very comfortable after a long day walking around Salzburg. They also have a lounge where you can get coffee, tea, or juice/water on the house either before you set off or as a little break in between excursions. As cafes can be very overpriced in Salzburg, it was nice to have the lounge there.
