I loved the gardens , nature of Adelaide so many places to go sight seeing. Heaps of old historic buildings to take photos of and marvel at! I was only there for a week to visit my Aunty in hospital but in the time I was able to do my own thing I enjoyed relaxing in the gardens and walking around. I didn't like driving in the city, as you cannot turn right and that's something my maps didn't recognise so that was very annoying. Parking is very expensive every where you go in Adelaide you have to pay to park. The people are no where near as laid back as home in Melbourne, but some were helpful with directions. Rundle Mall is HUGE it has so many shops to discover and the mall itself has some amazing buskers that you can watch, there's fresh juices to buy, Nutella pancakes amazing , and a good place to chill for the day and shop , plenty of seating in the centre of mall outside to rest and have a drink while you people watch. Overall I will go back to Adelaide with my partner to look and see places I didn't get too goto, T Bar Tea Salon looks and sounds amazing as a tea lover. All the historic places are cool and I want to also visit Snowtown. Conclusion Adelaide is nice but I went to relax and sightsee and it's really good for that. Oh and it's weird because in the city after 12 on weekends it's dead quite nothing is open pub wise pretty much and I couldn't find any shops or anything open for late night shopping and grocery shops all shut up early too... Kind of a quiet city! It was nice overall and I will visit again
Adelaide is like a big country town in NSW, with a pop'n of about 1 million people. The streets are all laid out on a square grid, and it is very easy to get around. There is a free city bus doing 2 different loops, and the tram is also free within the CBD. Adelaide, & South Australia in General is famous for its wine, but we didn't drink. The scenery around the vineyards is lovely, however. We loved Hahndorf, and visited Hans Heysen's home & studio, "The Cedars", about 1.5 km from main street . The Onkaparinga coast is amazing and we could have spent much more time there enjoying the walks and bike trails, and the beaches. We also loved Glenelg, the beach, the Beach House amusement centre with cool water slides and general vibe. Being so close to the city, it was easy. The central market is really fun being a foodies' market rather than cheap souvenirs. There are lots of pop up bars and places to eat in the lane ways. We'd go back to Kangaroo Island, enjoyed the 3 day Murray River Cruise, and wished we had time to do the Coorong cruise. There is a lot to do there. My 21 yr old daughter especially liked the different fashions ( that she was used to in Sydney ) and did some serious shopping around the central market.
We specifically went to Adelaide to watch the Tour Down Under for the first time and it will not be our last as we are already planning next year's holiday. We are also encouraging our daughter and her husband to come along too as Glenelg has everything for the whole family and we are sure our grandchildren will love it. Being keen cyclists we were in awe of the cycling facilities available in Adelaide and surrounds and rode our bike 4 times from Glenelg to Port Adelaide and again to McLaren Vale along the cycle track to watch the TDU. The weather was perfect and the food delicious.
I am ashamed to say this about any Australian place but Adelaide is one of the worst places I have ever visited. I have never seen such goings on in a major city. I am sure there are some nice things and people in Adelaide but what I saw with my 18 year old daughter was awful. Do not stay in the City Centre if you go there unless you like being screamed at by drunks, stepping over people passed out in the streets, watching people hit each other and the most disgusting language ever. I am no prude and dont mind a good time out but this City is out of control. This was my stay in Adelaide City and on a Sunday/Monday night as well. Thank god I had one night in North Adelaide to see that there was some normality in this city. Adelaide do something now to curb this behaviour before its too late. The one star rating is only for North Adelaide. There are much nicer places to see in our Country.
The purpose of our trip was to catch-up with our eldest granddaughter who is two months into relocating there from Auckland. We have been to Adelaide many times as our granddaughters mother has lived there for 10 years. We visited the Botanical Gardens, museums, Adelaide Goal, Glenelg, Monarto zoo plus shopping in the city centre all of which were enjoyable. Our best meals were at The Maid and the Bistro at The Payneham Tavern. Lunch at the new Lab (opened Thursday) next door was also good.
There are so many good restaurants and it is important to leave the city to explore the hills with their small villages and towns. The bus service is great and easy to get around. There are events for everyone. Loved the baroque concert in st peter's Cathedral. Enzo's Ristorante is a must and we attended a 90th Birthday High Tea at The rising sun which was really great. Lots of different foods to try. The wineries are a must.
