FAQs about hotels in Canberra

Culture, Politics and Military Mix

A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.

Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.

The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.

The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.

Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

We came many years ago when the children were smaller.

We came many years ago when the children were smaller. They are now adults and busy with their own work and activities. Coming here again at our later age brought great memories, but we are satisfied. Many places are still to explore in Canberra as we age. Regardless, Canberra has grown busy, many more halal food options, and really diverse population can be seen. Now, we think that it is a great place to live in!

    Floriade was disappointing.

Floriade was disappointing. The Canberra Glassworks was very interesting. The Botanical Gardens were beautiful and the walks around them were easy to manage. We found some great places to eat at - we can highly recommend PJs in the city, Mama's Trattoria and Yum Cha CBD. The metro system is so easy to use, better than trying to find a car parking spot.

The National Gallery of Australia, it's collection and the special exhibition was excellent. I could have visited other great sites, e.g. National portrait gallery, National Library of Australia, Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, New Parliament House, Questacon, Australian War Memorial and the National Museum of Australia.

Canberra has so much to see & do.

Canberra has so much to see & do. The majority of the tourists attractions are free. Down load a map of Canberra to see those places of interest like the War Memorial, Old Parliament House, Royal Australian Mint and the Zoo only to name a few. If you get the opportunity to visit Floriade, it's a must. I know it closes early October 2025. The Light Rail is convenient and easily assessable from Northbourne Ave. Tickets available at light rail stations from ticket machines. Street signs are clearly visible with easy to follow direction to suburbs or tourist attractions. Great walking & cycle tracks throughout the city. Loads of cafes, restaurants, bars, clubs, pubs and shops and shopping centres. Loved our recent visit to Canberra, cannot wait to come back.

We booked the standard room and couldn’t be happier with our Choice. All we needed was a bed for a very quick trip. The hotel was beautiful. We have stayed in many hotels in Canberra and I think this will be our “go to” hotel now. The room was large, with a nice sitting area. Bed was so comfy as soon as I lay down I feel asleep straight away. We had breakfast in the restaurant, we hadn’t booked ahead but there was no issues there. Great range of food options. Parking was underground and secure. Staff were friendly.

Great location next to the airport - just a short walk. Funky designed hotel - large rooms with spacious bathrooms. Meals were very good (not the cheapest) but worth the money. The breakfast had a lot of options and was very filling for a day of sightseeing in Canberra. Less than 10 mins in a cab into the CBD. Flight arrivals and departures board in the lobby area which was useful for our outbound flight, given there were numerous cancellations that morning

The hotel is located near the shops and service station (Coles Shell). The bed is comfy and the room is clean. Loved the restaurant/ pub downstairs. Good value for money. Would stay here again next time we visit Canberra.
