We really liked Castlemaine - so much to do plus it has the good vibe of a functioning rural town! For anyone who doesn't do 'twee' this is a great town to visit. The Botanic Gardens are worth a visit if you are into birds and flora or if you want a quiet stroll. The nearby art markets are also worth a visit and as is the Shades Of Gray garden gallery. We also enjoyed a ride on the steam train and the rail trail bike ride to Maldon.

Lovely old gold boom architecture, beautiful tree-lined streets (great in autumn). Amazing bookshop. The Mill (recently recycled industrial complex) is very well done with interesting and high quality specialist outlets (cheese, wine, smallgoods, etc.) and a great Viennese cafe (couldn't believe it!).

A pleasant country town with a lot of history. Nice tree lined streets and old historic buildings. The road traffic through the town centre is a bit chaotic and too fast making it a bit tricky to cross at times. Some Nice coffee shops in town and the visitor information centre is worth a visit.

Castlemaine is a picturesque town, some good attractions from what I saw in the almost two days I was there. Would go back to the Five Flags Hotel again where I had dinner. The old prison is amazing, never seen anything like it.

Castlemaine is an interesting city with lots of accommodation and dining options. It is designed around tourism and there are lots of interesting shops and attractions. The surrounding areas are interesting too. We could have spend more time there. The town centre is easily walked.

with our accommation at Goldenray, there was no sitting room, no lounges or padded chairs, no wardrobes that were open, there was no proper kitchen, we could only walk from bedroom to bedroom and up the hallway when inside, we were aware that the owner was sharing the other part of the house, not quite what we expected.

Our favourite part of the property was the deck with the lovely view across Castlemaine to the hills beyond. The bathroom was beautiful and the whole apartment was really well presented with lots of thoughtful details. Bev was the perfect hostess- providing privacy but being available if we needed anything.

what a gem! a little out of the centre of town, which suited us because of the proximity to the Goldfields walking track, but still just a very quick drive into the main part of Castlemaine. a lovely place to stay with a lovely host.
