Located on the World-Heritage-listed Heron Island, this resort offers free snorkeling lessons in the outdoor pool and free guided reef walks. The island was beautiful, staff were friendly and professional and there was plenty to enjoy and see whilst staying.
Right on the Great Barrier Reef. We saw sharks, turtles, whales, Sting/Eagle Rays right off shore. Lots of birds. If you want nightlife, this is not the place. Quiet, remote and relaxed. Paradise. A small remote Island with one restaurant ( good food) and nice bar with live music. A 2 hr boat ride that can be rough. We had a small boat over and large boat going back to Gladstone We extended our stay by an extra day and could have stayed longer
The cons: Communication ahead of our arrival left more to be desired. It was difficult to schedule the seaplane in a timely manner. Inconsistency between the stated seaplane schedule on the website vs actual seaplane availability meant that we had to cut our stay short by one day. Also, there was a tropical storm while we were there, which meant we were unable to dive during our short stay, and we couldn't do very much snorkeling either. We certainly realize that weather is out of the control of Heron Island Resort, but we wish they would have given us a free drink or meal as a goodwill gesture. The pros: Beautiful location. The rooms were comfortable and clean, however the main attraction is the wildlife that surrounds the resort. Even during our short stay, which was disrupted by a storm, we still were able to see some glimpses of the stunning coral reef ecosystem just off the beach. We want to come back!
