The tram system is currently going through a big upgrade so that will make things even better but everything is already quite accessible and there are wide range of things to keep anyone busy. Transport around Melbourne excellent. At Southern Cross station all country trains start. 5 to 10 minutes from one end city to the other. All trams free in city area. Visiting Melbourne really benefits from wandering around and getting lost in the city. There are lots of hidden gems. Visiting galleries and museums is a great way to spend a cold or rainy day, but when it's warm the city comes alive with outdoor cafes in Fitzroy and on the Southbank river-front.
