I would tecommed Ypres as a brilliant place to stay ifyou like history and the first world war the museums ate good and the war remains are never far away. And their is s world war trench just outside Ypres
Ideal location for WW1 visits between northern France sites and those in southern Belgium , only a short drive away. However, town is interesting in its own right with a wealth of shops and restaurants etc.
A beautiful town filled with the most friendly people you will find anywhere on planet earth. So much to do in and around Ypres. So much history. Loads of great restaurants within easy walking distance. Easy access to the train station for trips around the country. Safe to walk around and lovely and quiet at night. I will be nack.
Ypres is a beautiful town, well worth a visit. Great restaurants and bars, even 'Ypres Burger' was an excellent place to eat. Easy walk from train station, no need for bus or taxi. Flanders Field Museum and the Menin Gate memorial are outstanding.
Ieper has a wealth of history and the surrounding area. You can discover WW1 and feel what it was like in the trenches. If you are not interested in the war there is also lots to do, cycling, discovering the different beers, beautiful country side and beaches. The flemish people are very friendly and helpful. Its easy to walk around Ieper in flat shoes. Most of the shops are easy to access for wheelchairs and pushchairs. The market is usually in the square on a Saturday morning but just check with one of the locals as sometimes it is moved. Restaurants outside of the square are usually cheaper. There are some hidden gems of restaurants, with first class service, amazing food, great atmosphere, see if you can find them.
You can't do the Battlefields in a day - allow at least two or three. Ypres itself is pretty expensive for eating out. Even the Ypres Burger place, which was great (and cheaper than anywhere else around the main square) was expensive. Get to the Menin Gate by 6.30pm if you want a standing place near the ceremony; a lot of people were disappointed when they turned up at 7.30pm (for 8pm start) thinking they'd be able to see from a good position. At the moment, not many places are open for food in the small towns around Ypres that you might visit for the Battlefields and Memorials; plan ahead and bring food from Ypres itself. There's a supermarket down the side of the Cloth Hall / Cathedral.
The location on the Ypres square, close to the Cloth Hall and the Menin Gate is excellent. Staff are very friendly and make the stay personal, helping with local questions. Very easy to sit on the terrace outside and nurse a beer while watching the town go about its business. Rooms are simple and clean. Parking is a bit funky, they have a garage about 5 mins walk away where you can safely leave the car for a 10 Euro/day charge. No complaints, its very secure. Breakfast is just the right amount of choice for value for a continental breakfast. Restaurant in the evening had some great local choices.
From arrival everything was excellent. Private parking area especially good for rental car. Staff exceptionally friendly and helpful. Very comfortable, modern rooms. Very good breakfast. Dinner at The Table restaurant also very good, attentive and smiling service. Public areas very comfortable. Light and airy with attractive outdoor space.
