This historic city is beautiful. There are museums, monuments, shopping and restaurants. It is a very walkable area but you do need to travel to visit the WWI battlefields and some of the monuments. Be sure to visit the Menin Gate. There is a very moving memorial ceremony there at 8 PM every day.
This was my 6th or 7th visit to Ieper, I never get sick of coming here. I recently brought two family members visiting from New Zealand for a nights stay here also - they considered visiting Ieper one of the highlights of their holiday. Take the time to witness the Last Post at Menin Gate [8pm nightly], and visit some of the many military cemetery - the continuing respect shown by the people of Belgium to those lost in WW1 is humbling. And of course - there is no shortage of choices of establishments in which to sample great beer...
An interesting town for historical reasons Well known for its WW1 War Memorial and nightly remembrance it is so much more. A medieval town rebuilt, an impressive wall that you can walk around, a wide selection of restaurants and bars around the market square. Good choice of museums in the town and in the surrounding area. Do a little research before you go and have a few ideas of things you might want to visit. There is plenty for all ages (12 upwards) Every British citizen should witness the Menin Gate sevice once in a lifetime. Go for two or three days and explore a bit. Find it fascinating and intend going back.
Ypres is a beautiful town with much history. There are some excellent restaurants and bars. The Menin Gate is a must visit especially the Last Post ceremony at 20.00 every evening. St George's Church is most interesting and throughout the town there are reminders of the sacrifices made by so many during the First World War. Ypres does this well whilst combining it with a modern lively town.
Very easy to get around and see the historical sights with a car or bicycle. The Last Role Call under the arch was very moving, lots of Australian in the crowd and they were moved to tears. All of the museums were well done and sights of battlefields and burial sites were well marked
You can't drive anywhere near Yrpres and not stumble on a reminder of WWI, usually a British cemetery. The daily 8PM memorial "Last Post" performance at Menin Gate is a can't miss. Hundreds go every day. So many lives wasted... Visiting Belgium was the best part of our trip.
The host was brilliant, very good at communicating with us and very very helpful. The accommodation had everything (and more) we needed for our 5 day stay. The location was perfect, free parking right outside the property and it was just a 10 minute walk to the Menin Gate and the Market Square. The hot tub was an added bonus, as was the dishwasher! We will definitely use this accommodation on any future trips to Ypres. Thank you once again Alain and Fabienne!
Simply put, I liked everything! Comfortable and affordable room, right in center of Ypres. It’s right across the street from the WWI Ypres Battle museum - which is why I came. Was able to part affordably right across from the hotel. It was clean and the staff was awesome! Had a delicious European breakfast included. Definitely recommend it to fellow travelers.
The room is very well decorated and spotlessly clean. We had a room with a balcony which looked out onto the courtyard with a lovely Muriel on the wall. Very easy access into centre of Ypres, through a little lane. Breakfast vet good and ample for continental with everything being fresh. This is our 2nd time at this hotel.
We loved absolutely everything but the amazing breakfast, very helpful and friendly staff and general ambiance definitely deserve a mention. We wouldn’t hesitate in recommending this hotel & would most definitely would stay there again.
This hotel is located right in the centre of Ypres. Location is every thing when visiting and locating in the town for visiting all the battle field sites locally.. Staff were very friendly and the food was good value and good quality.
