If your into the history a great place to spend a long weekend. Make sure to attend the Menin Gate memorial ceremony (every night at eight). Ypre has a beautiful square surrounded by some decent bars and resteraunts surrounding the Impressive cathedral.
Ypres is small enough to be comfortable and find my way around easily. In Flanders Fields Museum is powerful and very well presented. Lots of choice for dining. The nightly Taps ceremony was very moving.
The last post, played at 8pm at the Menin Gate every evening of the year without fail - an unbelievably moving tribute. Get yourself a great Belgian beer in one of the local bars beforehand, then go for a nice meal in one of the excellent nearby restaurants afterwards.
Easy to walk around on foot. Some good bars - the best one was The Twelve Apostles on D'Hoodestraat - just off the main square. Lovely quirky, friendly little place! Menin Gate Ceremony should not be missed. And a visit to Tynecot Ceremony is very powerful.
I would tecommed Ypres as a brilliant place to stay ifyou like history and the first world war the museums ate good and the war remains are never far away. And their is s world war trench just outside Ypres
Ideal location for WW1 visits between northern France sites and those in southern Belgium , only a short drive away. However, town is interesting in its own right with a wealth of shops and restaurants etc.
