Lovely clean town with a cathedral being renovated. Church of St. Jaques a place of peace and quiet. Beautiful! Pity the ancient bridge is no more at present. However the town must keep up with the times. Many good restaurants. We used L’imperatrice which was a great find for food. Super people running it.
Alas we were there on a Monday - traditionally a closed day for museums in Belgium so did the churches only to find that Tuesday is closing day for museums in Tournai..grr. Check at tourist info right by Cathedral A wonderful place if you like Romanesque architecture and a great town square And of course it has a Leonidas chocolate shop to our glee...
The cathedral, square and bell tower were worth visiting. A pity the weather had turned wet as we would have liked to walk along the canal and explore the surrounding areas more. The town in general appeared rather scruffy and down at heel, but the rail links in Tournais allowed us to visit Lille for a day, which we enjoyed.
An often overlooked Belgian town which has alot to offer.. the Grand Place is stunning and the Cathedral is awesome, also some wonderful restaurants and bars where we found all staff very friendly and welcoming. An Nam vietnamese restaurant just outside the Grand Place is absolutely wonderful, the best Vietnamese food we have ever eaten.
Beautiful old houses and cathedral. Interesting older types of buildings like the Pont a Trous. It is lovely to walk along the river in the center of town. However there are a lot of areas in construction with renovation of historical buildings, extensive restauration of the cathedral is ongoing, infrastructure work in the streets, demolition of dilapidated old buildings and construction of new apartments. The city is alive and not frozen in a past that is being disneyified.
Great Cathedral (under renovation, nothing to see inside). Otherwise boring, run down and provincial Belgian town. Museum of Fine Arts - major dissapointment. I do not believe what they have in this run down architectural marvel are originals at all.
The place was great almost in the centre of town. The atmosphere was great and we really like the rooms.
