Friendly staff in every establishment we went to all seemed friendly and helpful! Would have liked to stay longer to get a feel for the rest of Alberni and surrounding areas .. I would go back in heart beat... One thing it did seem spread out I'd bring my scooter next time!! One of the have to stops is the "Clam Bucket restaurant "
Stayed overnight at Cedar Wood Lodge Bed & Breakfast Inn on our way to Ucluelet and Tofino so did not see much of the town. Did stop at a laundromat on our way back through town and enjoyed chatting with the owner and manager while we sudsed our duds.
They call this town the salmon capitol of the world, I would agree 20 years ago it might have been, but I fished up here on two different occasions this year both being 3 day trips and fished 8-10 hrs a day and for all my efforts was rewarded with 1 sockeye and a small spring which I released. I have always loved coming here for my vacation and have done so for many years. If however there is not something done to improve the sport fishing ( ban all net fishing ) line fish only, I do not see myself or any in my group returning. I watched the commercial fisheries for sockeye and the limited opening for springs and it was sad to witness.
Too many people pass right through on their way to Tofino and the west coast. Consider stopping in Port Alberni for a night or two, it is a friendly town with lots of history, some nice restaurants, beautiful scenery - I recommend a visit to the Harbour Quay.
We we fortunate to be there with the Salmon festival & Derby. Quaint village with lots to see! Fish and chips on Harbour Quay. Quality Foods a great place to find groceries. Easiest way to get around is by car
Spoat Lake is a great place nearby for fishing, water sports, canoeing or kayaks. Port Alberni itself is not a very picturesque town, and lacking in great restaurants, but it is a good location to travel either to the west or east coast of the island. The main highway to the west goes right through Port Alberni. Many people take the day-long boat trip from Port Alberni either to Ucluelet or Bamfield-- it is relaxing and scenic (we went to Bamfield). We ate at the German restaurant, which is very good, and the seafood place right at the harbor, also good. We liked the restaurant at the boatlaunch on Sproat Lake. The Indian restaurant was dreadful. Favorite spots: Stamp River Falls, Sproat Lake, Little Qualicum Falls, Cathedral Trees.

The staff at the hotel were very friendly and accommodating. I actually reached early before the check in time at about 12 pm . I enquired whether I could do an early check in as I had to go to Tofino and planned to come in late and had some Nanaimo bars which I wanted to keep in the fridge. I was told that house keeping was in progress, but I could keep the bars in the room I was allotted.
