Located in Port Alberni, Berkie’s Bed & Breakfast has self-catering accommodations with a patio and free WiFi. The air-conditioned property is 30 miles from Parksville. Parked right outside house. Bob greeted us and helped with bags. Immediately offered to show us where to see the salmon jumping. Well!!!! Didn’t just see salmon jumping up the amazing waterfall in a beautiful forest but a mummy bear & her baby on the other side of the river too! She was trying really hard to catch a salmon but a big male bear came along!!! Could this stay get any better??? Yes! Our accommodation was a comfortable basement (still lots of light though with windows) lounge room with huge tv, table/coffee/tea/fridge, gorgeous bathroom with all the necessities plus more - shampoo/conditioner/shower wash/spare toothpaste/shaving foam/mouthwash etc - bedroom with the most comfortable bed and pillows of our whole trip. Could this stay get any better??? Yes!! Yvonne presented us with the best breakfast ever! Oh, forgot to mention the homemade biscuits on arrival that were devoured gratefully the night before. So breakfast was yogurt with her homemade granola and preserved peach / a huge pot of tea / fresh fruit / cheese / fresh orange juice / freshly made waffles with fresh fruit and bacon and maple syrup. All so beautifully presented along with a great chat and a joke from Bob. Lasted us all day!! We truly couldn’t fault this stay and believe this is a MUST STAY EXPERIENCE of your trip around Vancouver Island. We loved it so much were thinking of staying one more night on our way back through from Tofino!!

A truly interesting town. Quite different in character from most other BC destinations we went to. It is situated on a fiord-like bay that almost completely cuts the island in half. So there is access to the Pacific from their harbor, while physically they are only an hour away by car from the east side of the island. Their location and harbor has created many economic opportunities and the city has prospered.
The trip on the MV Barkely to Bamfield was fabulous! Beautiful scenery and we saw some whales, a black bear, and a sea lion. In the late afternoon we enjoyed the walkway along the estuary, very pretty and we saw a bear there (across the water from us) also. We also went to the Maclean Village site. We were the only ones there. I think it would have been more interesting if, as we were told in our guidebook, the sawmill was running and there were people dressed as inhabitants of the old village telling us what it was like. That was not the case and my understanding is it's because the Municipal government is not funding/supporting the place -- shortsighted IMHO. We also went to see the Mars Water Tankers at Sproat Lake but the plances are not on display now, except from a distance. Sproat Lake is a pretty place, and might be fun for families with a beach and picnic grounds. There are restaurants in Alberni but not a lot of choices. That could be improved.
The harbour and dock-side area is low-key but very nice. This is a 'happennig place' on the weekends. If you're into boating or trying something different, Pt Alberni has lots to do. Visit McLain mill, golf, take a trip of the Frances Barkley (to Sechart or Ucluelet), or book a fishing excursion. If you're looking for a great place to eat - Bare Bones for sea food and atmosphere fits the bill.
We come often as I have family here, but my husband absolutely loves it! There are great lakes to visit, awesome hiking, the pier is nice, restaurants are good, and it seems like a lot of young families have discovered that it's a great place to vacation. Try out some of the local beer, visit the market on Saturday mornings, and definitely visit Cathedral Grove and Sproat Lake. Also, it's a great stop on your way up to Tofino. (Our favourite place to stay is the Cedar Wood Inn B&B — it's the best.)
The Frances Barkley boat trip (offered by The Lady Rose Marine Services) was excellent...expensive, but a worthwhile trip nevertheless. Do visit the Port Alberni Museum, a gem, which is attached to the public library...a must see...donation entry.
What a great town with friendly people. The views on the trails around town are beautiful and the sights amazing. We went ATVing with Edge ATV adventures and our guide Blaine was incredible. He went out of his way to make sure our family had a great experience and saw local sights that we could not have without his genuine care.
Everything was absolutely perfect. Would recommend to anyone staying in Port Alberni. The staff were so sweet and seemed to really care how we were enjoying our stay. Anytime someone saw us they asked if we had everything we needed. The pool was totally a highlight. Kids and us loved it and spent a lot of time in it. The beds were very comfy and even though the rooms are a little dated, everything was clean and comfortable. The included breakfast was fantastic and met our needs perfectly.
We really enjoyed our stay at Berkie’s B&B in Port Alberni. The hosts were absolutely great, they gave us perfect advice for dinner and told us good sites nearby for trekking! Plus the breakfast was gorgeous! We would definitely recommend it!
We really appreciated the warm hospitality of Tom and his wife. They run a nice, comfortable and clean B&B in Port Alberni. The available free parking, quite position and delicious breakfast are a plus of this place. You should stop there.
It was a affordable and had a kitchen. Basic dishes/utensils were provided. If you are planning a long stay and are on a budget, I recommend the hotel. There was dirt under the chair cushion and beds, however, though all else seemed clean.
Great spot for families. Clean, had all the kitchen amenities, close to the Clam Bucket (excellent seafood restaurant), short drive to Harbour Quay. Enjoyed the little extra touches (a rubber duck bath toy for our 5 year old twins).
The lovely host. Irene has a wonderful place and she makes you feel really welcome and comfortable. We had really nice stay. I would recommend this to everyone who wants stay in Port Alberni.

We weren't expecting such fabulous meals! What a nice surprise. Home cooked meets gourmet/organic. What more could you ask for? The hosts were beyond friendly, the boat itself is an antique gem that has been carefully restored and well cared for. Very roomy & cozy for a boat!
