FAQs about hotels in Basel

Switzerland Through the Ages

At the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany and France, Basel is an eclectic mix of historic and modern, tranquil and vibrant, with Swiss cleanliness and efficiency thrown in for good measure.

Augusta Raurica, on the outskirts, has a well-preserved Roman theater, while the Old Town is a museum of medieval buildings. The Renaissance Town Hall looks down on Marktplatz’s daily market, while the red sandstone and colorful tiles of the Münster were reconstructed in the 19th century. Bringing it right up to date are the modern creations of city residents Herzog & De Meuron, designers of London’s Tate Modern.

When you’ve finished exploring this architectural heritage, there are still plenty of things to do in Basel. The city’s fine art museum is the world’s oldest art collection, and the zoo is the oldest and largest in Switzerland. Remember to bring plenty of Swiss francs for the shopping mile along Clarastrasse and Freiestrasse.

The Basel accommodations on Booking.com range from hotels in Grossbasel to B&Bs in Kleinbasel, home to the nightlife. If you’re flying into Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport in February or March, you might just catch Fasnacht, Switzerland’s biggest carnival. You’ll have to get up early to catch the 4 am start, though!

Basel is a modern city, an important economic center. It has many museums and a rich cultural life. The old town is very beautiful. A superficial tourist can "see" it in one day, but those who want to delve deeper can spend several very interesting days there.

Basel is a wonderful city to explore, and I highly recommend discovering it on foot – the architecture is beautiful and everything is within easy reach. Public transport is excellent: the buses are always on time and very clean. Just make sure to carry some cash with you, as card payments (POS) are not available on buses. A walk along the Rhine riverfront is a must, offering a relaxing and scenic experience. For a taste of local life, don’t miss a coffee at Finkmüller or the amazing pastries at Bäckerei KULT.

We stayed in Basel for a week, using it as a transit point for traveling to other cities in the area: Colmar, Luzerne, and Freiburg. Basel itself has easily enough to see for three full days: interesting museums, beautiful architecture, cathedrals, dining, etc. If you stay for more than a day you get a Basil Pass which allows you to use public transit for free. The public transit works like a clock, although it might be a bit difficult at first to figure out what goes where.

Basel has a mix of old buildings, many museums (~40), lots of interesting streets and alleyways as well as a full range of good quality shops and restaurants. Very enjoyable to walk along the tree lined paths along the Rhine too, where you can find numerous drink stalls and openings to restaurants. Eating out is not cheap, but quality if usually good.

On the bright side: 1. The location on a 5-minute walking distance from the main train station, it's convenient. 2. Also you have access to 2 or 3 pretty big grocery stores located in and around the station. 3. It was pretty easy to get access to the hotel and the room — they send you the code which you use everywhere in the building. 4. The hotel provides you with some cooking utilities, so you can save some money and cook for yourself (Switzerland is EXPENSIVE). 5. The furniture looks nice, the original designer had a taste.

the breakfast wasn't included since this is an apartment and not a hotel, but the location was near the coop and other areas, even the indian restuaurants like bay leaf was just few steps away, the public park was near by, i went there for a walk for 2 hours during my stay. I intend to book my stay again at this place when i plan to visit switzerland again, the host was very helpful, he provided me with tools that i needed, he provided me with two fans because there was no AC, i faced no issues at all,
