Set on slopes by Lake Geneva, Lausanne is a laidback and liveable city. The views of the lake and dramatic peaks of the Alps are simply stunning, especially from Sauvabelin Tower in the northern woods.
Surrounded by vineyards, this is an outdoor lifestyle city great for sports including sailing, cycling and hiking. In fact, many international sporting governing bodies and the International Olympic Committee are based here. There is also an excellent Olympic Museum. In winter, Lausanne skiing options include the Jura Mountains to the north-west, and the Valais canton south-west of the lake.
By the lake (Lac Léman in French) is the Ouchy port area, home to many of the Lausanne hotels and restaurants. To the north is the Flon district, known for its lively nightlife popular with students.
The cobbled Old Town – the Cité – is a Swiss Heritage Site on a hill at the city’s highest point. It houses the castle and Lausanne Museum, both watched over by the multi-spired Notre-Dame cathedral. At the foot of the hill are 3 squares with markets, one of which – Place Riponne – is on the Metro.
This is the world’s smallest city with a Metro, an indicator of the wonderfully efficient Swiss transport system, meaning that Geneva Airport (the closest to Lausanne) is easily reachable.

Lausanne is a beautiful city and has, lots of culture and history, the Olympic Museum, beautiful waterfront, great places to eat or have coffee. It's easy to get around using public transport. The public transport system is brilliant, and when you stay in a hotel you will be given a public transport card which enables you to travel unlimited journeys for free, on Metro and Bus and travel to the outskirts of Lausanne by train. This travel card is immensely helpful especially as the city is built on the side of a mountain. Be prepared to negotiate some very steep streets. My tip, take the Metro up to the next stop and walk down.
The city is set on the shore of lake Geneva, and offers stunning scenery, and is a short journey from the Unesco World heritage site of The Lavaux Vineyard Terraces and a little further to Montreux. The people mainly speak Swiss French and English.
I love Lausanne, I go there to visit family a couple time a year, and every time I go I find something different to enjoy.

Lovely beach town, with great public transit and well-curated museums. Breathtaking views of Lac Leman/Lake Geneva with plenty of options for watersports, cruising, or just relaxing on the beaches. The Olympic Museum is a must see, and the best deal is 3-day pass for 3 museums: Lausanne History Museum; Art Brut Collection; and the Roman Museum of Lausanne-Vidy.
Be prepared for lots of stairs and hikes, Lausanne is built on 3 hilltops and they can be steep! A hike (or bus ride!) up to the Hermitage is rewarded by amazing views, and a great cheese fondue at Le Chalet Suisse. On the way through the old city, reward yourself by stopping in to some of the chocolatiers,

Then returned 2 days later just to pay the 6 francs city tax because they forgot to add it to my card.
Hassle! Paid 7 x more on the trip than the city tax.
If someone wants to stay across from the SBB train station. It’s right there.
If someone is a coffee connoisseur- the room has espresso machine but it’s not Nespresso and I didn’t like the taste so I threw it away.
- Bed was comfortable.
- Single room was small
- Bathroom stall v small kept bumping myself in the shower.
I went to Mexicana Grill in FLON.
Got off the boat in Ouchy
I took an hour to find a hotel and everyone Leif giving me wrong directions.
Didn’t spend enough time to venture out.
Just the cafe - around Ouchy - SBB train station.

Lausanne is centrally located for French Switzerland.
Lausanne is centrally located for French Switzerland. You can explore the beach front, visit a castle on its shores, and take a 100 year old small gauge train to the mountains where snow remained in late May. The nearby towns of Montreau and Vevey are charming and accessible in 10-20 minutes by train. We also saw Bern in 1.25 hours by train - a lovely preserved medieval city much higher up. Trains are fabulous. Subway up the steep grade that is Lausanne are FREE and come every 4-5 minutes, so no worries about knees.
This is a really well located hotel down on the lake front of lake Geneva and a couple of minutes from the metro. We had a room looking out to the lake and the view was beautiful. The bed was also very comfy. The breakfast was wide ranging and had a mix of everything, hot and cold, that anyone could want. The staff were extremely welcoming and helpful. I think in terms of a hotel that is decent but not too extravagant (for Switzerland), this did a good job.
The hotel is a traditional hotel with very elegant main lobby with plenty of decorative marble. It has a reputable restaurant (which was closed at the time of my stay) The rest of the hotel is well kept up and pleasantly decorated. Bedding is comfortable. It is conveniently located near the stops of the Lausanne metro to Ouchy. It is a short walk away from the lake and Olympic museum. Staff was very friendly, efficient and helpful.
- Hotel part of the Sandoz Hotel Foundation that already guarantees excellent standards in Switzerland
- The location is fantastic facing the lake between the Beau Rivage Palace and the Château d’Ouchy sufficiently distant from the walk way along the lake to allow a peaceful resst
- Les Cinq Mondes amenities in the toilette
- The swimmingpool although small is enjoyable
- Indoor perking place
The hotel is just in front of Gare de Lausanne., and close to Lausanne subway (1 minute walk). The stuff we’re very friendly and helpful. They gave me coffee capsules ( l’Or) for free because they have a capsule coffee machine in the room. Also there is, in the same building, a Starbucks.
They have AC!!
