Nanjing
With a history of 265 years, Nanjing Tulou Qingdelou Inn offers en-suite accommodations Shuyang Town. There is free parking and free WiFi across the property. Refurbished tulou: old on the outside, traditional central courtyard, but the rooms themselves are totally modern - indoor plumbing, hot water, etc. Plenty of electrical outlets. Wi-fi excellent, had 5G band, and supported VPN. Bed firm but not China rock. Owners VERY helpful. Village is very picturesque, including a large round tulou. On arrival, got off tourist bus past the hotel; owner nice enough to come and pick us up and take us to hotel. On departure, hired owner to first take us to Gaobei (for "King of tulou's), pick us up, and drop us at Yunshuiyao. Very reasonable price. Had dinner at hotel, great meal. Great place to stay, hope to return. Disclosure: travel partner is Chinese national, so language not a problem. Arrived Nanjing (Fujian) on high speed train from Xiamen. Outside train station, to the right, shuttle bus #6 (fee) goes to bus station, change to another bus #6 to Tianluokeng tourist center. Pay entrance fee, another bus fee, and take area shuttle bus. Route appears to be only clockwise: Upper Tianluokeng viewpoint (ticket check), Tianluokeng parking (ticket check), Tianluokeng lower viewpoint (no check), Yuchang Lou (check), Taxia. Entrance to Tianluokeng and Yuchang Lou is restricted to one time only (ticket is punched). One POSSIBLE method of entering again: take a selfie of YOU in front of the tulou on first visit, then show selfie if you want to return again (worked for us once in Yunshuiyao). Each area is about 2-3 Kms from each other. From Yuchang to Tianluokeng, it is all uphill, but doable. Taxia to Yuchang basically flat. Never saw on-duty shuttle buses traveling in reverse direction, though we were able to hitch a ride, Taxia to Yuchang, on an off-duty bus taking an off-duty tour guide home.

A room designed by someone who knows what you want/need in a room. Given free upgrade to a deluxe room. Large bed, small round table between bed and windows, perfect for your computer. Electrical outlets on each side of the bed, plus extra near the table, so each of us could charge mobile, plus use computer, plus hot water kettle. Wide window sills provide extra storage space, and with outlets below the sills, perfect for camera battery charger. Windows had nice view of stream and stage. Bathroom is a capsule, but showing attention to detail, the toilet had a shower curtain to protect it from the shower. Low divider shelves between bed and bathroom capsule provide additional storage. Well located, 400m from Hegui Lou and 1.3 km from Huaiyuan Lou, right on the riverside path that connects the two. Boss provided excellent directions, suggested we visit Huaiyuan first in the afternoon as that was the longer walk, then Hegui Lou the next day. Boss gave us a map of the village. Liked hotel so much, stayed another night. Delicious breakfasts in mornings, good restaurant on same side of path as Hegui Lou, the restaurnat closest to Hegui Lou, for dinner. In front of hotel is the bridge/upward path to the road for the bus to the train station.

Excellent hotel specially the owner , very friendly and accommodating , the breakfast and dinner foods served really yummy , I missed the Xiamen foods now , I will get this hotel if I come back and bring my friends and relatives .the location of the hotel inside the scenic site , lovely old town just walking distance to the hotel . The hotel was really cheap and the foods they served really excellent , the yummy taste .Thank you qingdelou inn , I enjoyed my stay and the yummy local foods served to us. 👍
The Fujian Tulou were a real highlight of our trip. Very worth the travel just to visit them. We had two days there and that was prefect. You definitely need a local driver though or you'll miss out on so much. We found our driver because he was at the train station as a private taxi driver.
one can see the "famous" tulles in one day. typically its a day tip from xiamen but i booked a two night trip here. my suggestion for others: day 1, leave xiamen after lunch and ride to nanjing. reach there around 5pm. check-in stroll and enjoy the town, and eat and drink in little shops with the locals day 2, continue to enjoy the sights, hire a car and go around the other tulou.(after 3 tulou tours, one will be a bit bored, well i was) day 2, 12 noon, take the bus back to xiamen. avoid going to the touristy movie set area --Yunshuiyao. it has nothing historic and its like a cheap disney park.
Try a bicycle tour through Hakka villages route. Look to the less famous earth buildings and talk to the native people, they will be pleased and maybe never have seen or talked to a foreigner before. Nanjing area offers various country roads for exploring the past....
