Featuring a garden, Sueño Real Tatacoa is set in Villavieja and also provides a shared lounge and a bar. A hot tub is available for guests. This place looks literally as an oasis in the desert! The room was simple but really nice, clean and with air-conditioning. We had a fantastic view over the pool that was a must after the tours around the area. For breakfast we got eggs, fruit and some marmalade with a typical kind of “bread” and as drinks juice and coffee. The structure is 10 minutes by foot from the center where you can get something to eat (they do not have a restaurant yet but allow you to have food delivered there). The staff was really friendly and helped us organizing tours.

Villavieja is hard to get to if you do not have your own transportation. A taxi ride from Neiva between 7:00pm and 6:00am can cost 100.000 pesos (there are no buses or taxis or colectivos between these times except from the airport or bus station). The town is quiet and charming, right on the edge of Tatacoa and a short drive or long hike to the entrance. The town shuts down by 10:00pm every night. Nice little tiendas, restaurants aren't great, so don't expect a diversity of food or bars.
The landscapes and natural scenery in the Tatacoa desert are superb, and totally worth a visit. The only inconvenience around there was of course the heat, so be prepared and plan your sightseeing tours as early as possible to enjoy the views (we found it quite hard to keep wandering around after 10 am, but fortunately we started before sunrise)
It’s a no frills, typical Colombian small town. Do not expect 5 star dining, but what you can expect are the nicest people! They know that tourism is rapidly becoming their main source of income, so the locals really go out of their way to make travelers feel welcome. I would 100% recommend a guided tour of La Tatacoa.
Tatacoa Desert is very nice and you can go to Rivera Termales, take a boat ride on Magedelena River. Food at sal.... si puedes is very good and reasonably priced. Sunset at Tatacoa is nice which we missed. Make sure you take a direct bus to Tatacoa. Different companies offer different options but they don’t tell you unless you ask. For COP 40,000, you can get a direct bus ticket from Bogotá with movies, great seats and AC. Flying is not that expensive either. A worthwhile trip.
Time stands seems to stand still in Villavieja. What a blessing to experience the unrushed pace of this peaceful town with it's huge central plaza, a nice little museum, restaurants and cafes where you can longer.
Don't waste your money and time going to the museum! Also observatory is a complete rip off, bring your own telescope if you want to see the stars. Villavieja does not have good restaurants so plan accordingly!
