Amazing place. Beautiful beaches. The resort was all inclusive the food selection was great for all meals. We got to Varadero via Viazul Buses which were extremely inexpensive, $10 CUC from Havana, three hour ride. When getting off the bus one needs to take a taxi to the hotel which is alproximately 2-3 kilometers. Negotiate the price with the taxi driver. Do not pay more than $10 CUC’s the taxi drivers try to take advantage of tourists specially when the tourists do not speak Spanish. It is a 5 minute drive so have the money ready and hust give the drive $10 CUC’s which is comparable to $250 CUP which is the currency for locals. An average salary in Cuba is $500 CUP’s a month which is equal to $20.00 CUC’s, the currency for tourists.
This place's main attraction is the beach. In general it is a place designed for tourists who want some relaxing time by a beautiful tropical beach under a really hot sun. The place is full of hotels and casas, restaurants as well. Many water activities are offered in the beach as well. Also one can book a tour from there to Trinidad and other nearby cities of Cuba as well.
Didn’t see the surroundings. Renting a car impossible unless previously booked from UK and very expensive. Would have liked to visit Matanzas. The hotel was packed full of visitors so we didn’t feel inclined to go on any of the tours as we actually would have liked to explore on our own... the options for that were expensive. We ate in the all inclusive hotel therefore did not really get to experience Varadero... our experience was the hotel, unfortunately. I speak fluent Spanish so was able to ask for what we needed. It would have been more difficult for others albeit the standard of English at reception is very good. The beach and the sea were amazing! Really stunning.
Varadero is full of tourists, staff around the city treats you badly, the food almost everywhere is horrible, the place is so over the top expensive (and I live in Dublin), the entire city is a tourist trap. The only beautiful thing is the beach. Definitely don't go if you want some peace, all the bars are made up for tourists and it's disgraceful.
Beach towels were never changed during four night five day stay. Hotel towel were the size a little bigger than of hand towel, which was unacceptable. Toilets were clogged had water all over floor. Toiletries were not replaced daily, one day had no toilet paper. Rooms run down: Stay away!!
Beach was fab ! Good central road which wasn’t too busy to wander along and see all the old cars cruising up and down ! Felt very safe - enjoyed Calle 62 Bar and Beatles Bar even did a salsa class ! Hop on hop off bus goes all the way to Marina
