Amazing place. Beautiful beaches. The resort was all inclusive the food selection was great for all meals. We got to Varadero via Viazul Buses which were extremely inexpensive, $10 CUC from Havana, three hour ride. When getting off the bus one needs to take a taxi to the hotel which is alproximately 2-3 kilometers. Negotiate the price with the taxi driver. Do not pay more than $10 CUC’s the taxi drivers try to take advantage of tourists specially when the tourists do not speak Spanish. It is a 5 minute drive so have the money ready and hust give the drive $10 CUC’s which is comparable to $250 CUP which is the currency for locals. An average salary in Cuba is $500 CUP’s a month which is equal to $20.00 CUC’s, the currency for tourists.
This place's main attraction is the beach. In general it is a place designed for tourists who want some relaxing time by a beautiful tropical beach under a really hot sun. The place is full of hotels and casas, restaurants as well. Many water activities are offered in the beach as well. Also one can book a tour from there to Trinidad and other nearby cities of Cuba as well.
This was my first visit to Cuba, it was very inexpensive. I stayed at Club Karey a multi building "resort" with 2 stars. Some of the rooms were very nice our first room was not. It did not take much to get switched into a larger room with a sitting area and view of the ocean. The food at this particular resort wasn't that appetizing to me but with your all inclusive wrist band you are able to go to participating resorts and enjoy their facilities as well. I enjoyed the catamaran out into the ocean for snorkeling and a boat trip up a river. I truly enjoyed going to a local women's house for a authentic Cuban meal. i wouldn't say that i would go back soon, however at the price it makes it very alluring. The beach was gorgeous white sand and clean, the shell hunting and snorkeling near the resort was so much fun relatively few people on the beach it was fine for topless sunbathing and just enjoying the beauty of the area.
The beaches are amazing. The hotels are decent (we were in 4+). The food is fine if it's meat; could have been more fruit. I wasn't impressed by their deserts though (even lost 2 kg :-))) - so maybe it's for the better. I've never seen such seriously professional entertainment! Every evening, the dance show was totally magnificent! Some concerts I've been to in Canada look not professional compared to that! My kids were impressed too. The area is very safe, there is enough entertainment for either kids or adults. I recommend it!
Didn’t see the surroundings. Renting a car impossible unless previously booked from UK and very expensive. Would have liked to visit Matanzas. The hotel was packed full of visitors so we didn’t feel inclined to go on any of the tours as we actually would have liked to explore on our own... the options for that were expensive. We ate in the all inclusive hotel therefore did not really get to experience Varadero... our experience was the hotel, unfortunately. I speak fluent Spanish so was able to ask for what we needed. It would have been more difficult for others albeit the standard of English at reception is very good. The beach and the sea were amazing! Really stunning.
Varadero is full of tourists, staff around the city treats you badly, the food almost everywhere is horrible, the place is so over the top expensive (and I live in Dublin), the entire city is a tourist trap. The only beautiful thing is the beach. Definitely don't go if you want some peace, all the bars are made up for tourists and it's disgraceful.
