I have been to many places in Germany (having lived there for a long time). I'd say Freiburg is probably the overall nicest and most pleasant place there. Beautiful old buildings, not just in some spots, but almost everywhere. Great atmosphere. They even seem to have solved the traffic problem: everybody is on bicycles. I had never heard of this city util I was looking for an orthopedic surgeon in Germany and found the wonderful Gelenk Klinik here in Freiburg. But what a gem! Clean, beautiful old architecture, streams alongside cobblestone roads, fast public transportation make the city feel small and manageable, everything works, there is lots of culture and events.
