"The Staff at Zugspitze hotel were warm and friendly. The hotel is in a great location, you can easily walk to lovely old town, the station for the train/cable car to the Zugspitze, supermarket and much more. The hotel style and rooms are very traditional for the area and of a nice standard. We enjoyed a lovely breakfast and the coffee machine in the room was a Godsend!! Although we didn't get to use it, there is an indoor pool and steam room that looked lovely and spa treatments available. Great hotel in a terrific town, with friendly staff and great food. What more could you ask for?"

The Peak of German Skiing

At the foot of Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is one of the country’s top ski resorts. The Bavarian style of its Alpine chalets includes beautiful flowers lining every balcony, and colourful frescoes adorning the outsides of houses.

The varied skiing and snowboarding in the surrounding Alps is based mainly on blue and red runs. To ski on the Zugspitze glacier you take a train up to the mountain then a cable car down to the slopes. The summit itself offers magnificent views of the valleys below, provided you’re lucky enough to get a break in the clouds.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a former host of the Winter Olympics and the World Alpine Ski Championships. It also has a ski jump that forms part of the world cup of that sport. In summer hiking is the most popular activity and a lengthy route leads up to King’s House on Schachen, a supposed castle that looks more like a house.

It was built for Ludwig II, the eccentric king behind the region’s most impressive castle – Neuschwanstein to the north-west of Garmisch. The road between them passes by Oberammergau, famous for its 10-yearly Passion Plays.
