Schmalkalden is very pretty with a huge number of beautiful old houses, not overly restored. Outside of the centre it has good supermarkets with long opening hours and easy car access to scenic walks and tours in Thuringia. It is nonetheless a very quiet village and we found just 3 bar/restaurants open in the evening in June. Apart from the bakery (close to the house) most things don’t open till 10am. About a 20 minute walk from train station. Having a lockbox for the keys was convenient, we used it ourself during the stay when our group split up so that whoever returned first could access the key. Furniture, and beds, were comfortable.
