Hotel Monarca provides air-conditioned rooms in Higuey. The property features a bar, as well as a terrace. The accommodation offers a 24-hour front desk, airport transfers, room service and free WiFi.... The room was exceptional big and comfortable. Extremely clean and quiet! The bar and rooftop terrace was delightful!
Located in Higuey, 40 km from Bávaro, Higuey Center City provides a terrace and free WiFi. This is my home away from home. They are making renovations by adding a hot tub on the roof a lounging area where you can soak up the sun and it will be nice when I return on my next trip
Situated in Higuey, 26 km from Bayahibe, Campito Loving features a garden and free WiFi. For added convenience, the property can provide towels and bed linen for an extra charge. Campito Loving is the ideal place for those seeking a respite from the hustling of everyday life. The property is beautifully maintained and offers different areas where one can retreat and fully appreciate nature. In the middle of a sugar cane plantation, Campito Loving is easy to access (we came from Santo Domingo) due to the excellent road conditions.
We visited Boca de Yuma and had the most delicious local fish for lunch at La Bahia restaurant. We highly recommend it. We also visited the Basilica de Higuey and took a stroll in town. But the best part of our trip was the stay at Campito Loving. The hospitality from Nicole, Mechy and the rest of the staff was superb. The food (breakfast was included and we also enjoyed a couple of lunches and dinners) was delicious! Quite a treat. This is a place to return in future trips to Santo Domingo.
Higuey is inland Dominican Republic, do not expect much English! Take your google translator! Do not rent a car or drive here unless you have your life insurance paid up, some of the worst drivers I’ve ever seen and I have been to a lot of countries. We felt safe the whole time and people are friendly, ate at local spots and cafes, ask your taxi driver for recommendations. Also taxis are cheap, ours became our driver for 3 days and always told us the price in advance and will wait for you for a few dollars more if you need him to. Your hotel can find a good one for you. If you can handle cultural shopping, go for it in town. Don’t forget to get a fresh coconut water, they are huge for about $1.00
Higeuy is ideal for the in-town experience, short drive to the mall for topping up on groceries etc. Ready available taxis to take you around. The famous chapel is just walking distance from the apartment - just hang a right, then left, straight ahead and you’re there. The history of this town is amazing and the centre comes alive on the weekend with live bands and just too much to eat.
The Basilica is beautiful. Be careful of the “official” tour guides (marked with Vests). They can be very bothersome and intimidating. Had one follow us everywhere and insist that we had to be “official”. We told him to back off and tried to lose him. We finally just had to get out of there. He may have been an “official” tour guide but I describe him as being the most dangerous individual that I have encountered down there and I have been to the DR nine times. He did his best to intimidate a male Dominican friend. It may have just been this one individual and his personality and size but be cautious. Traffic is horrendous. There should be some traffic laws. Stop signs might help. Driving can be dangerous. If you are travelling to Higuey from elsewhere and you tend to get motion sick, take some Gravol. Their driving is crazy.
