Santiago, is one of favorite cities to visit when I travel to the Dominican Republic. It is known for two things in particular the Monumento de Heroes and the wildly popular Águilas Cibaeñas baseball team. Santiago, also has a rich history similar but distinct from Santo Domingo. Bachata, a style of Dominican music is said to have had its origins here and in the Cibao region in particular. For extended stays, a fortnight or more, I would recommend travelers buy food from the local supermarket called Centrol, Nacional or La Sierna supermarkets. Street food can be found in abundance but one must take into consideration that one can become adverse to local street food such as Pico Pollo, a place that sells fried chicken and fries and the like. Traveling around Santiago is always an adventure. There are three main ways to get around: take Uber, use a gua gua (local taxi that you have to experience once in your life) or a private taxi, which can be expensive and is now slowly being replaced with Uber. Traveling between cities: best to use Metro or Caribe Tours. Ultimately, getting around Santiago is easy and quick as most things are centrally located. Avoid using machines that charge you exorbitant fees on your bank cards
Transportation in taxis is good but Uber taxi is the best, I don't have a down side of the Town, good place to go, my favors spot Heroes Monument is a top a small hill from there you have a view of the City, Kukaramakara Restaurant and Aroma del Sol Bar Restaurant while there are others Restaurant as good as the ones mentioned I prefer those two and all of them adjacent to the Heroes Monument with good views
Santago has many places to eat and a variety of dishes. There are many cultural places in Santiago due to globalization, such as american food (TGI Fridays, Burger King, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Domino's, Papa John's, Taco Bell and others. Asian (Chinese & Japanese): Pez Dorado, Super Rico Restaurant, Expresso Jade, Sushi Ya!, Belcaire Niguri... International: Satay, Paparazzo, Vivres, Front Door, Kaafa, Tete Club... Seafood: Marisco Centro, Pedro's, Puerto Madero... Steak's & Grill: Camp David Ranch, Rancho Steack House, Cukara Makara, Boceto, La Parrillita, Montezuma, Nano's.... Italian: Piccola/La Locanda, Il Toscano, Il Pasticcio, Pizzarelli. Mexican: Algo Mexicano, Zókalo.... Bakery/ Sweets/Ice Cream: La campaña, Benny Postres, Qcakes, Helados Bon/Yoguen Früz, Haagen Das.... Ambulant food or Street food: Strong Burger, Empanadas Lalín, Empanadas Monumental, Oche a tu gusto...
Santiago has lots of history. They seem to be improving the city with every visit I make. Lots of GREAT restaurants and beautiful views of the mountains. Just be careful there still is a very high crime rate so don't wear anything flashy and walk with lots of money. For the most part the locals are very nice and friendly. I would NOT recommend driving.
Santiago is nice for the weekend and that would be about it. I spend a lot of time in DR, so I visit Santiago a lot for flights or to pick up family. It has a few tourist elements, decent nightlife, and some decent restaurants, but it is mostly a jumping off point. I will say this; it is a lot less stressful than Santo Domingo and a lot fewer 'tigres'. Although Santo Domingo is a more interesting city, I'd take Santiago over it any day. Plus there are a ton of great and affordable destinations within 1-2 hrs from Santiago.
The best thing about Santiago de los Caballeros is the road to the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, but many sections of the road are not highway and obviously you get stuck behind a slow, smoking old truck...

Stephanie at reception, and the Concierges Elvis, Gustav and Batista were absolutely a delight. Very good English, very friendly and full of useful information and advise. Nothing was too much trouble. Hotel location was perfect, the adjacent Chinese restaurant served excellent food, and the disco was great......nice music, reasonable bar prices and friendly locals. We requested and got rooms on the quiet side of the hotel, so no problem from the disco noise.

Via Emilia is a guesthouse relatively close to the Caribe Tours bus station (but not within walking distance). The rooms are clean but nothing special. Breakfast is good and the wifi works fine. Okay for a short stay. Don't miss the museum in the Centro Leon, which is only about two blocks from the hotel.

Not much to like other than bright lights inside the hotel. It's a motel not a hotel that's just a (cabaña) motel that's very poorly maintained
