While Bahia de Caraquez has a great location for a warm and relaxed coastal stay in Ecuador, the April 2016 earthquake left significant damage to city. Recovery is in the works but there were few dining options during our stay.
Bahia is working hard to recover from last year's earthquake. People were busy cleaning up and rebuilding. Restaurants were serving up delicious local seafood and the bars were a welcome social gathering area. We especially enjoyed meeting locals at the lively "H" Bar. We will be back.
I've known Bahia for many years way before the bridge was completed that crosses the River but now it is beautiful in the night time. They were working on the roads downtown along the river front but will be great when finished. The City has a new shopping center but still has many little stores to shop in. The people have a great love for exercise and you can see large group of people running in the afternoons plus a park next to the Ocean where kids play and people rollerskake.
A nice respite from the coast scene. A good place p catch your breath for a couple of days. Several infrastructure trust urge improvements in the works. Friendly people. An excellent restaurant for more refined palates , Chef Hugo. Nice male con, safe, most amenities for a place that size.
The city is located on a peninsula where the Oceano Pacifico and the Rio Chone converge. The "tip" of the peninsula is lined with attractive and numerous condos and restaurants. The walkway along the beach gives you a good view of the ocean and you can see the town of San Vicente across the river, which is accessed by a new bridge. Yes there are parts of the city that are showing the usual signs of wear and tear and some of the poverty that exists in most places I have been in Ecuador. The malecon and main street are great and there were signs of the upgrading of their infrastructure. If you are looking for a destination with sprawling beaches, this is not one of them. The ocean has eroded much of the beach on one side of the peninsula, and the beach that does exist, and again it is quite small, is along the river. But if you want friendly business owners, great food choices and peace and quiet, then Bahia de Caraquez is the city of choice. It is close to big beaches across the bridge and we were taken by one of the many taxis to Canoa for $10 one way, I will return to this gem of a city again.

The staff were excellent. They took care of anything we asked for. They were very friendly and always had a smile. I would definitely stay there again. When we left the hotel, there were no taxis around. The owner sent one of the guys working there to load our stuff up into his personal car and took us to our next destination. Now that is service!

The whole hotel is a chick boutique with artistic touch all over the common area and rooms. Hazel is a very sweet and helpful lady. She's the mastermind behind all the creative art you can find on every corner of the hotel..
