I was told on arrival not to leave the hostal after 7pm as it was dangerous. I have since learned some grim activities that happen in Quito, and not just to tourists. I didn't experience anything bad but won't be returning. Just keep your wits about you, don't take anything out with you that is of value. There's plenty of organised trips to enjoy and the old town is pretty and green with a lot to see. I think 3 days is enough.
Historical center is great. Had a driver take us to all nearby places of interest including Mitad del Mundo and artesanal market so got good overall familiaritt of the place. Vista Hermosa was great restaurant.
Quito historical center was amazing and lots of history to see there. I recommend a tour to get the most out of it. The newer part of town has devolved since COVID, as is the case with many cities. Many businesses have shut down. I would not want to stay in Quito for a long time (e.g. greater than 5-7 days) because of the restrictions on walking at night (it's not recommended for tourists due to crime) and there are many areas of the city that are not considered safe for tourists to walk around even during the day. That being said, we spent 3 days in Quito, walking 8 to 10 miles a day from the historical center to Parque la Carolina (not considered safe per locals and guidebooks), up to the teleferico, and around the historical center without any incidents. Additionally, there are many day trips from Quito that sound great, but that we did not partake in because we were on our way to a Cotopaxi trek and then the Galapagos. But we did visit the Mitad del Mundo (the equator) which was definitely worth the 45 minute trip outside the city.
Dont beleive all they hype about muggers and wallet pinchers. I think that has been pushed to much. Obviuosly use your sense and dont go flashing anything about. Lots to see and do in the historic centre, book yourself onto one of the walking tours. Do the Cathedral and the virgi on the mount (tho take a taxi) Caroline Park in the city centre is wonderful and if you want to do 'Ecuador in a day' then visit the botanical gardens in that location. Other visits are the Telerifico (go by taxi) nd the views are jaw dropping. If you have not acclimatised at height then load up with some cocoa leaves / drink ad take a sick bag - just in case. The walk around the top of the hill is great but take warm clothing and something to drink. There are one ro two cafes at the top but I liked that rough and ready home cooking that was 'in a shed' by the horse coral. Mitad del mundo (middle of the earth) is a lovely one hour bus ride away and whist in that area go a bit further out to Pulhulahua which is an extinct volcano that you can walk into. Same again take warm clothing as it can get a bit windy and cloudy at the top. The walk up is slightly challenging but have a go (am 65) as it is a geat feeling when you get to the top. Lots of things to do and see dn if you can afford $50 then do the Cotopaxi (smoking) volcano trip,it blew me away. But same again take it easy as your up around 16,000 feet and take warm clothing (and your passsport) for a stamp. Overall I would rate Quito quite highly as i had a lovely time and In hope you will too. Forgot to say I was there just on a week (had a rest day after Cotopaxi). PS as an aside I needed my latop repaired and I found a repair shop and the guys did it for free - sorry guys cant remember the shop but it was right by Carolina park
We did the walking tour offered through Secret Garden, our guide was Fernando. He was excellent, personable, very knowledgeable, his English was very easy to understand. Part of our tour included a trip to Yumbos, a chocolate making company. Our host’s name was Ivan, he was terrific. The city is historic and beautiful. Unfortunately the city is dirty and quite busy in the day, but expected.
Quito is a bustling city It has a great feel to it. We only really did the historic quarter and there was loads more to see. Incredible churches and museums galore Restaurants were very good The height means things need to be taken slowly LOTS OF HILLS !! Airport is at least 1 hour outside city and more at rush hour so be warned for your return to airport!
Centro Histórico, Quito
This boutique hotel used to be the Turkish Embassy. It has 6 rooms, I suspect all suites (ours was). The manager was friendly and made us feel like we were at home. He went out of his way to arrange for anything we asked for. Dinner, prepared by a new graduate from the local culinary school, was a delight. it was made especially for us and we were the only one there. It is like having your own staff in a luxury home. Almost worth the trip to Quito just to stay here. Best hotel I have stayed in anywhere.
The hotel was beautiful and very comfortable. The staff was amazing! Luis organized transportation for us from the airport which worked perfectly and the hotel was waiting outside with umbrellas as we arrived because of a light drizzle. Breakfast was great and clearly the staff was so welcoming and told us about the local fruits we were eating. The location is very central to the sites of old town and restaurants. I would highly recommend!
We loved our stay at Vista del Ángel, with the best views at the historical center of Quito! The room was perfect, beautiful and comfortable. The hotel is full of nice details and decorations, a very pleasant atmosphere to relax and enjoy. The staff was very helpful with recommendations for activities and nice places in the neighborhood. We would definitely recommend this hotel if you want to explore and enjoy Quito!
The staff were very friendly and went out of their way to help guests Nice rooftop/patio area with some very nice views over the city as well as hammocks Close to the old center of Quito for sightseeing The hotel is very beautifully decorated with a museum like feel and is located in a historical building over 500 years old.
Quito
We had a lovely welcoming when arrived. The room was above expectations and the staff made it up everyday which was lovely. The staff were superb and helped us with any questions and possible places for us to go see. We will be returning to Quito once weve travelled around ecuador and most definitely would love to stay again here.
Wow, Chakana hotel is a dream. I had to change my accommodation plans last minute, showed up at 9pm and there were there to greet meet with open arms, chocolates, tea, and the quietest most comfy room. Thank you chakana for the superb stay. You will be my number one choice in Quito from now on.
Charming hotel on a Santa Domingo Plaza, opposite the Santo Domingo Church in Centro Historico, Quito. The ambience is very nice, and all the staff were exceptionally helpful in providing advice and ensuring that my stay was wonderful. Will hope to visit and stay here again.
Centro Histórico, Quito
Great place, one block from city center, they help us book a nice tour to cotopaxi, bed was comfortable like in my home and big like airport 😉 For the price is this hotel on of the best choices what you can make in quito 😉 Great brekfast and nice restaurant.
The proprietors of this family owned hotel were incredibly warm, welcoming and helpful. Breakfast was delicious, my room was comfortable and the location was very convenient for sightseeing in the old town.
The hotel was even better firsthand than the photos online would indicate. Andres’ hospitality went above and beyond! Wonderful views over Old Town Quito. Delicious breakfast. Comfortable bed.
Amazing staff and a nice boutique style hotel. A real find just a few minutes walk from the old town. Breakfast was very good as well.
Quito
Spotless hotel in the touristy part of town. Much cleaner than just about anywhere I stayed in Ecuador.
