Madrid is a large city but Alcalá de Henares has it's own charms, not least that is it much less busy but no less special. The old streets are alive at night as people walk about, before maybe enjoying a drink or meal in one of the many lovely hostelries here.
The town hosts many festivals and we happened to arrive when one was in progress. The community was fully involved.
The town has a history that goes back to Roman times so don't miss looking up the Roman ruins and the ancient university which is over 500 years old.

It is a suburb of Madrid near the highway - fine for people who travel by car or don't mind travelling by train for 35 minutes to get into Atocha in Madrid.
There are some cafes and restaurants close to the hotel we stayed at, as well as some shops and pharmacies.
We were close to La Garena station with a direct link to the centre of Madrid - there is also a metro station in the area.

Very beautiful old town (buildings from renaissance), perfect for a short visit when you're in Madrid. You can also visit Cervantes's birthplace.
Amazing phenomenon of storks who live there in great numbers and occupy major monuments :)

A historical city close to Madrid, with baroque churches and a magnificent old university building plus the Cervantes Museum.
Plenty of restaurants (Spanish, Italian, Indian, etc.) but quite expensive for dinner. And lots of nice bars with terraces under the arcades.

The place is worth to visit because of its old and rich history. If you go there for a week, you can fully explore it. There are plenty places to eat and you can choose any of them because the food is really good. You can easily access Alcala de Henares from Madrid (bus or train).
We visited Alcala in March and saw LOTS of storks building their nests everywhere – on the roofs of houses, churches, etc. The view was amazing.
The place is also famous for the fact that Miguel de Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote, was born here!

We had no issues checking in and were surprised by the room's size, lighting controls, and breakfast. You can't beat the location. There is a 3-5 minute walk to the Plaza Cervantes and Alcala's university. From there you can continue to walk through the city center. Alcala is one of Spain's kept secrets. I can't underestimate the friendliness and professionalism of the staff. From the cleaning crew to the Front Desk team to the Management.
The location is perfect, and the price is unbelievably reasonable. The bathroom and bedding were both spotless and new. You can really notice the effort they put in the hotel.
The owner was also extremely friendly. I wished my Spanish was not so poor. It would have been fun to hear more about the house. The private roof terrace on my room was a very welcome added touch!
Defintely will be back next time I am in Alcala!
The room was very clean, as was the hotel itself, and of a good size with plenty of wardrobe space. As the hotel is down a cul-de-sac it was quiet even during the busy parts of the day. Situated within a 5 minute walk of the historic centre of Alcala, slightly less to the bus-stop for the #824 bus for the airport and less than 10 minutes to the railway station, the overall location is very good.
Ivan was an very welcoming and accommodating host in every way. I would give an 11 for location if I could, it's directly opposite the Cervantes house and in the middle of the Calle Mayor. The room with terrace is exactly what it says: has stairs to your own private rooftop terrace, a quiet getaway with 360 degree views of the rooftops, belltowers, and active birdlife of Alcala de Henares.
A great little apartment centrally located in Alcala de Henares. Enough space to house the five of us, and could even have accommodated a few more people. The host was very accommodating and took good care of us. Parking, while not directly on site, was available and secure. The apartment was close to good restaurants and the main plaza.
A really nice 1st floor apartment in the very heart of historical Alcala de Henares - excellent location for bars, restaurants and supermarkets. Everything was well kept and the owner was very responsive to any questions (and in English :) ) An excellent location for one or two people and only 20 minutes from the airport in Madrid
A lovely boutique hotel in a perfect location. Situated at Plaza San Diego, Cervantes Plaza is immediately behind. A short walking distance from the University, numerous restaurants, buses and taxis. Easy access to trains, a 30 minute ride into the heart of Madrid.
Alcala de Henares is a lovely little historical city and these rooms are right in the centre of the main street! But the room is well soundproofed, so when you have finished your night out, you can have a great sleep.
I LOVED the hotel restaurant -- it was excellent, and the food was delicious.
I liked the on-site hotel parking.
I liked the convenience to the metro
I liked the neighborhood
Clean, bright and spacious room in a beautiful parador. The bed was big and extremely comfortable. Loved the heated floor in the huge shower and strong water pressure.
Hotel is located near the station and near old town in Alcala de henares. Room was comfortable and with air condition which is important during hot summers in Spain.
Very good location for visiting both Alcala de Henares and Madrid. Very helpful and kind staff. They gave us good advices on how to visit better Madrid.
