A 7,000 Year Old Mediterranean Jewel
Surrounded by the sandy Costa Blanca beaches and the crystalline waters of the Mediterranean Sea, Alicante has a rich heritage built over thousands of years. Alacant (as it's known in Valencian) has a deep history ranging from the first tribes that arrived at the slopes of Mount Benacantil to Greeks, Romans and Moors. A very nice city with a lot of history, nice food, friendly people and of course with amazing beaches. I went with the purpose of just enjoying the beach and the sun and ended up finding a lot about the history of the city, meeting amazing people, tasting delicious food and beer and basically falling in love with the region. It definitely make me want to come back and also discover other cities and towns on the south of Spain. I recommend doing a guided tour on the first days of your stay because, independently of the guide they will always tell you which places you should visit, which restaurants to try, what kind of activities to do, which beaches to visit and how to get there. Beutiful restaurants and bars and cafes and all in a lovely area of Alicante. Lots of walking and pet friendly places too and we ate in El Portal, one of our favourite places, nice for a treat and also others found along the way which we would return to.Guest review byAnonymous - 8.0

A great city with a lovely old part of town which is fun to just wonder around. We really enjoyed sitting in the squares at night enjoying tapas. There is also some fun nightlife which the young can take advantage of until the early hours of the morning! The tram is very easy to use and good value. You can jump on and off at different beaches along the way. The marina is also a lovely place to have evening meals on the waterfront. The castillo Bàrbara is worth a walk up to admire the view from above the city and out to the sea. All in all a great place to stay for three or four days.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

We have been to Alicante now a few times, we have never been disappointed. It is very close to the airport, there is a large beach, there is a long and interesting promenade and lots and lots of tapas alley's. Sunshine and blue skies. Not but only 33 in early August. A very friendly city and not overwhelmed with tourists. Felt safe throughout, even in the park under the castle that we forewarned about. Lovely old town under the castle and lots to do without a car. We solely walked around about a mile and a bit around our accommodation. We also took the tram to Benidorm. Tram not so good, a little bit English; slow, overcrowded and late. Benidorm was good but loved the authenticity of Alicante. Lots of Mercadanos! Fastest airport in the world! Alicante is a Spanish Holiday town. By that I mean lots of Spanish people go there. Less so other nationalities especially the Bargain loving Brits in Benidorm up the coast. I was there 8 weeks and unless you are in the tourist beach marina area very few locals speak English. The down side to the town ( and the world these days) is the rubbish and especially the dog mess. It is everywhere. The locals all seem to own a dog and do not clean up. The city is full of communal segregated rubbish bins. Great if the locals can be bothered to put rubbish in the bin. Leaving it stacked up at the side is not the answer. No collection on Sunday so the piles of rubbish and the smell in the 35C heat are not good. The beach looks great but being met by pantie liners and condoms floating towards you as you step into the Med is off putting. On the plus side I found great cafes and places to eat and compared to other countries and other cities in Spain it is way cheaper. Supermarket shopping for Self catering is also cheap. Getting around with a bus pass is also easy and cheap. There is a Metro but it is slow and overcrowded.
