Between lush hills and undulating coastline, Gijón is the largest Asturias city. Its oldest part covers a peninsula with the modern Elogio del Horizonte sculpture at its green tip. Gijón activities include diving and dolphin watching, and there are 2 golf courses in green surroundings. The Atlantic Botanical Gardens were the first in northern Spain, and sit opposite the impressive buildings of Laboral University’s Viesques campus. Landscaped Isabel La Católica Park is close to is the El Bibio bullring and across the river are the Gijón Exhibition Centre and Asturias Museum.
Another museum was home to the city’s most famous son – Melchor de Jovellanos. Also named after him is an elegant theatre overlooking Paseo de Begoña park.
