Very nice little town right at the border with France, giving you the opportunity to visit places at the both sides of the Basque country. It has very nice sandy beach at the end of the quite a long walkway where people walk, ride bikes, rollers, skates. You can enjoy sitting at the nice cafeterias around the city, but the main experience is actually the medieval, fortified city center located few minutes walk from the sea. Narrow streets, beautiful stone buildings, nice restaurants, small town squares. Definitely a city worth of visiting!
1)Hondarribia is a place I liked very much, lots to see and do and a beautiful harbour for swimming. 2) Take a little ferry to France, have lunch and have a drink at one of the many bars / restaurants. 3) You MUST go to the La Hermandad de Pescadores, what a wonderful experience, delicious food, nice wine and very pleasant staff . 4) I thought the Pintxos were very boring compared to what's on offer in San Sebastian
There are numerous excellent tapas bars and restaurants both on San Pedro and up in the old town which is very pleasant and has great views. The quality and variety of seafood is fantastic. The supermarket shopping in nearby Irun is very competitive price-wise.
Loved Hondarribia, fantastic food , great atmosphere, lovely coastal walks, but a lively centre too, historic extremely clean, every restaurent and bar we visited had spotless facilities even when extremely busy! Very friendly and efficient staff in all bars and restaurants.
What a lovely town, I am sure there are many along the coast like this but Hondaribbia is an excellent choice for its offering and location. We visited inland and travelled into France from this location before going West to Asturias to continue our holiday. Would definitely recommend St Jean-de-Luz for a day out. Hondarribia is a lovely bustling town for dinner, be that pinxos or a restaurant meal. Itsape and Sardara are good places to start!
Beautiful town with at least two excellent restaurants, particularly Sebastián. But beware, the owner and the general environment there are a bit stuffy even though the food is excellent. Order the chocolate dessert but stay away from the cinnamon ice cream and Rice Krispies (a bit of a dud). The ferry to France and a day at the beach in Hendaye are musts. The parador in Hondarribia is not to be missed but I did miss air conditioning when I stayed there!
Hondarribia
Classic Basque caserio very close to Hondarribia and Irun with some great restaurants and tapas bars within cycling, or walking, distance. The hosts are very friendly and Rosa has a wealth of stories and information about the area (you'll need to speak Spanish, or Basque though...). Superb breakfast, including delicious local pastries, served on the terrace with great views over the countryside. Great position for cycling up Jaizkibel (an imposing local mountain) or along the Bidasoa river 'via verde', or into France.
As romantic a hotel as you could hope to find. Centrally located in the old town with its own parking. Very well appointed with views from all rooms [I suspect]. The breakfast is wonderful with a cook on hand to prepare eggs, etc if you want. The staff is friendly and super helpful. All in all, a great place in a great town.
Amazing location and super friendly staff! They were so helpful with reccomendations etc. We were really lucky to get one of the hotel's two parking spots, which are free and really close by. The room was nicely decorated and clean. The bathroom was especially lovely and clean!
