I visited this area again after 28 years. It’s become much more touristy than I remember, which was a bit overwhelming at times (though of course, I’m a tourist too). Still, the beauty and atmosphere of this old walled town remain truly special. We visited in mid-March when Valencia and the nearby town of Benicarlo celebrate Las Fallas. Unfortunately the weather was terrible. We walked up to Peniscola old town and visited Papa Luna castle which crowns the headland. The old town is a maze of narrow streets, lined with tapas bars and restaurants with outdoor seating. Some people might compare Peñiscola to Benidorm!
Some people might compare Peñiscola to Benidorm! We think it is nicer! It is very Spanish and not a beer-swilling English cafe in sight! Clearly, during the Summer, it is packed with families and very busy. Parking is very difficult to find and must be paid for between 10:00 - 14:00 and 17:00 21:00.
