An Ancient University Town with Fascinating Culture
In the southwest corner of Castile and Leon, the Spanish city of Salamanca is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Old City is one of the most beautiful Renaissance cities in Europe.
Right next to the Portuguese border, Salamanca has unique architecture including Romanesque, Gothic, Moorish, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. The Old Cathedral dates from the 12th-13th centuries and is joined together with the 16th-century New Cathedral.
One of the most charming squares in Spain, Plaza Mayor is the heart of Salamanca and an excellent example of Baroque architecture. Take a stroll among the sidewalk cafes, cool off with some ice cream or relax in one of the picturesque restaurants.
Founded by King Alfonso IX in 1218, the University of Salamanca has more than 3,500 international students and teachers. Known for its Spanish courses for non-native speakers, the university houses a huge library with more than 150,000 invaluable volumes.

I had visited very briefly while I was a child and always wanted to go back. It was better that I remembered. The historical buildings, cathedral, university, Casa de las Conchas, or the surprising Art Deco Museum, were great - and what to say about Iberico ham! If you have the opportunity to visit the nearby factory do not hesitate - you will learn why the ham deserves the high price you pay for it! I didn't have the chance to visit nature areas around due to the wild fires, so I hope I will return in a no so distant future.Guest review byRosa Maria - 10.0

We stopped in Salamanca for one night on our way from Portugal to Santander and were delighted we did. Plaza Mayor was magical, beautifully lit up in the evening, and full of life, perfect for an aperitif before dinner in a side street. In just a few hours we explored the old town, the University, and the New Cathedral with its amazing stone carvings, even spotting the little astronaut hidden among the statues. The hotel we stayed in was right next to the main square, and had an exceptional hostess who did everything she could and was very helpful. The hotel is small and modest, but the place is cozy and inviting, and it's a shame we didn't stay longer.
