This is a beautiful little medieval town with cobbled streets and impressive ancient buildings. A central feature is the large cathedral of Colegiata of St. Juliana, where you can visit the cloisters or attend Catholic mass. It stands in a square which is bordered by an art museum (Jesus Otero). A few cobbled streets run off the square, with plenty of restaurants and hotels to choose from. They are proud of their cheese and other local produce, so there are several shops dedicated to this. The Conventa Clarisas (convent of the poor Clares) is also very charming and is famous for its pastries for sale. We stayed in the beautiful Hotel Casa del Marques, whose staff were very friendly and welcoming, in a well-appointed and spacious room with large comfortable bed, seating areas and ensuite, all in keeping with the charming classic style of the hotel. We also spent a night at the Hotel los Infantes, which is impressively grand. It is easy to access this small town on foot, but it is possible to drive through the cobbled streets and there is a public car park which is free. The town is not actually on the coast, but is 10 minutes' drive from pretty local beaches.

This is a must-see, very beautiful town.
This is a must-see, very beautiful town. It is close to the Altamira Caves, although we decided not to visit them. We ate in a little restaurant at the square and the food was incredible and very cheap. We got to Santillana del Mar by car and it was easy to find, parking is available and overnight parking was free.

Santillana del Mar is a well preserved historic town in beautiful setting. Lovely to walk the cobbled streets and soak in the ambiance of the old town. The Catholic Church was really interesting as was local museum- downside was no English signage in either.
Barely 2km from town is the astounding Cave of Altamira and museum. They have protected these prehistoric caves by building a museum containing an accurate replica of the caves and artwork. That alongside a fascinating exhibition of the era concerned made for a compelling visit. In high season, best to get there early as there are limited numbers going through the museum. Lovely walking through area and viewing (from distance) original cave entrance. Beautifully maintained and very helpful staff. Information in Spanish & English.
Multitude of cafe/restaurants in old town with great food

A delightful medieval town beautifully preserved. Didn’t have time to explore much as we were walking the Camino, but could appreciate it all. Well worth a visit with lots of interesting shops and restaurants.

This place is unique, as are each of the houses / places to stay - so much character! The church of Santa Juliana is a gem, and the 12th century cloister is amazing. The village is a lovely blend of culture and country - incredible architecture and free-range chickens / horses. Altogether delightful!

Santillana del Mar is a beautiful village with some lovely buildings but is leaning towards being overly touristy and much of what was on sale was repetitive and not great quality.
However, it has a superb ceramics shop - if you are interested in lovely pieces then do visit ARPA.Also a lovely little leather goods sho[ and a couple of decent jewellers .

Love this hotel in the centre of Santillana. We stopped off before catching the ferry the next day, so handy for Santander. It is a smaller Parador which I prefer. Very friendly service throughout. Lovely old building and fabulous landing where the bedrooms on first floor leed off. All stylised in keeping with this lovely old building. Food I felt was better than some of the other Paradores we stayed at on our trip. Whilst it doesn't advertise car charging, we were able to charge our electric car in the garage there.
Really lovely building, felt very authentic. The pool was an added bonus. The room was big and had good facilities, the bed was very comfortable. Was a stone's throw from Santillana del mar, just outside of the village with parking. The breakfast for 10 euro was really good, you really got you're money's worth. Would really recommend this hotel, exceptional value for money. Staff were really nice and it's easy to visit surrounding towns.
My stay was simply amazing. Rafa (the host) is extremely welcoming and professional...a super host. Nothing to add. The building is very well maintained and clean, the room was comfortable with a view on one old street of Santillana del Mar. I enjoyed the breakfast very much on the terrace with a view over the countryside.
This is in an unbelievable old building that is marvelously restored. All floors are chucked full of antiques. A pleasant sitting area in the lobby and bar. Be sure to visit the 2nd floor sitting room.
They provide one of the top 4 breakfasts we have had on our Camino hike of the del Norte, 17 different hotels to date.
Beautiful hotel with amazing views, very well maintained, lovely spa experience and very friendly staff. The restaurant was great and the food delicious. We also loved the antique car and motorbike collection. The room was beautiful and the beds very comfortable. Spotlessly clean. 10/10!
Great location just a 5 minute walk to Santillana and 1 km from the Altamira Museum.
The hotel staff were wonderful and the restaurant was very popular although we didn’t eat there.
The rooms were small but nicely appointed
Extremely hospitable staff, charming hotel with memorabilia representative of old Spain, including an incredible clock collection. Could not be better situated, right opposite the pedestrian entrance to the old city.
Beautiful little town.
Astonishingly preserved
Not a great deal to do other than wander around trying to keep your jaw off the ground
A great place for an overnight during our road trip across northern Spain.

Helpful staff
Beautiful garden area with seating
Amazing interior furnishings
Great breakfast
One of the best hotels we stayed in during our trip. The room was clean and spacious. The host was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast easily as good or better than most restaurants.
Lovely charming traditional style hotel. Great location and plenty free parking. Very clean and tidy and all the staff were very friendly and helpful. Very good value for money.
I selected this hotel because it looked very quaint and Hospederia Santallina was quaint. The old walls were exposed and you got a feel for the age of the city.
I loved the atmosphere and lovely hospitality of the staff. They also had alot of great information about the Camino and the village of santillana del mar
