Carpe Viam features accommodations in Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Among the facilities at this property are a shared kitchen and a shared lounge, along with free WiFi throughout the property. As a pilgrim, the worst thing among the pain and the sun, is that you forget your passport, guide AND credit card in the last town while your‘re marching on to the next one. Exact this happened to me and the hosts immediately contacted me and offered to send my items with the ‚jacotrans‘. I really didn’t expect people to be so nice, professional and helpful on the Camino. Without any friction, my documents arrived the next accommodation even before my arrival. To the location, check-in and rooms: Location: Carpe Viam is perfectly situated in the city center. Around you can find divers shops and restaurants. To the main cathedral of Santo Domingo it is only a way of less than 3 minutes - therefore, perfectly located. Check-in: On my way, it is pretty unconventional to find English speaking hosts/staff in towns and villages. So, I was really thankful and comfortable with the check-in procedure at Carpe Viam. I arrived just shortly after the opening time and was positively surprised that it was open already. All public areas smelled recently disinfected and the staff were wearing masks. Therefore, I felt really safe during this special time. Rooms: The rooms are spacious, larger than the average room in other accommodations. Additionally to the bed and bathroom, you also have a desk and a chair, which is pretty ‚luxurious‘. Also it smelled just recently disinfected and was absolutely clean. Nothing to complain about. I felt really relaxed and could recharge well for my walk on the next day. I‘ve had a really nice stay and would recommend it to anyone considering booking Carpe Viam :). Thank you so much for this experience on the Camino 💞.
Featuring free WiFi and a terrace, RoomConcept Hostel offers pet-friendly accommodations in Santo Domingo de la Calzada. The rooms are fitted with a flat-screen TV. General impressive stuff: This place is amazing, it offers coffee at all times of day, and you are not dependent on staff to get it! You definitely are a winner among all the pilgrim places, in terms of that. The only thing - you have to make sure you insert the exact amount of change in the machine. They also had a fridge which could be used by everyone. The room: The room was good, though only one table, which ended up being used as a luggage bench. The bed was comfortable, there were hangers on the wall, which was good, having in mind the limited space, there were toiletries in the bathroom. Good value for money in general. The staff: The staff was friendly and helpful, and still friendly when i was a bit pissed off after struggling for 30 minutes to find the door of the reception. They gave me one of the best maps of a town I had ever seen - like large markings, and understandable, I was impressed with it. They also showed me what were the sights that were important to see, also explaining where the Santiago road was.

Conservative boring town. Very religious. There was a lovely bar around the corner from the hotel that a lot of locals frequented, which was lovely and had a good atmosphere, one of the few places we felt comfortable. Felt Franco's presence was alive and well in this town.
You have to definitely see the chicken in the cathedral! It is really impressive, with all the chapels, and its worth seeing. Friendly locals, beautiful architecture. Vegans can survive there. They have supermarket called "Eroski", which takes some searching, but you can still find the couscous, fruits and veggies.
They had a festival or celebration at night on the day we staying, so their speakers make very loud noise until midnight around 3:00 a.m. we couldn't get sleep the whole night. It's terrible.
A very interesting old town on the Camino. The central ‘way’ passes right through the centre of town, by the cathedral which is well worth a visit. Pop in to the Parador next door, even if you’re not staying there, perhaps have a coffee or drink in the beautiful old area of this hotel, right on the square.
Parador was elegant and relaxing; it has a beautiful lobby. Room and bed were comfortable. WiFi service was fairly good (could have been faster). We loved the location of the parador in town. The cathedral next door is a "must visit"; it has a unique story. We found a lovely restaurant a block away for dinner, and chose not to use the hotel restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and wish we could have lingered another night.
The cathedral interior is spectacular - look out for the chicken! Apart from that, this small town has little to offer with only a few eateries and little to offer in the way of shops. OK for a stopover or a base to explore the Rioja region, which is well worth exploring.
